Tasting notes

Sourced from eight different sites in Napa and Sonoma (it's labeled Napa County 43%, Sonoma County 57%), Spottswoode's 2021 Sauvignon Blanc was fermented in stainless steel barrels (50%), used French oak (25%), new French oak (20%) and other vessels (5%). The result is a complex, textural wine that's plump on the palate, round and silky, yet also bright, fresh, vibrant and long, with layers of fig and melon fruit that gradually unfold in the glass. I've been deliberately conservative with respect to its aging potential, but it's worth pointing out that a 2012 tasted at the winery was still drinking exceptionally well (91 points).

The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc is a very pretty and distinctive wine. Citrus peel, mint, white flowers, sage and tomato leaf lend quite a bit of character. The 2021 was aged in a combination of steel, new oak, neutral oak and concrete eggs.

About the Producer

Spottswoode Estate is a famous winery in the Napa Valley (Napa Valley) region of California, USA. The winery is a family-owned winery with a history of more than 100 years, famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1882, George Schonewald established the winery. In 1910, Mrs. Albert Spotts became the owner of the winery and gave the winery its current name. In 1972, Mary Weber Novak and his second husband, Dr. Jack Novak, bought the winery. In 1982, the winery produced the first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon dry red wine, and this year also happened to be the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the winery. Since 1985, the winery vineyards have chosen to use organic farming methods. Today, Mary's two daughters, Beth and Lindy, run the family business. The vineyards of Springswood Winery have the ideal terroir for growing grapes. It is located on the west side of Saint Helena, and the soil type is clay loam, so it has good drainage. The winery's current vineyard area is 40 acres, mainly for Cabernet Sauvignon, and a small area for Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat Clone Sauvignon Musque. There are also two historic buildings in the winery, a Victorian farmhouse (now the winery offices), and a stone wine cellar built before Prohibition, with bottled Cabernet Sauvignon Chen Fang is here. Springswood Winery currently produces a variety of wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon and Field Book. These wines are generally very delicate and elegant, with a high level of balance and typical structure. It is worth mentioning that the 2009 Spottswoode Family Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon, St. Helena, USA was shortlisted for the 2012 award of the prestigious wine magazine "Wine Spectator". in the top 100 wine list.
