Tasting notes

The 2018 Vintage Port from Sandeman, which was sent as a cask sample, has 106g/L residual sugar. It has a powerful and heady bouquet that does not quite possess the delineation of some other 2018s that I have encountered. The aromatics are just a tad too hedonistic. The palate is very sweet and candied on the entry with luscious liquorice infused black fruit, espresso, curry leaf and a touch of Xmas cake. It is a thoroughly enjoyable Vintage Port, though the warmth of the growing season seems to just rub out a little of Sandeman’s style.
About the Producer
The background of Sandeman refers to the history and origins of the Sandeman brand, which is primarily known for its production and distribution of port wine and sherry. Sandeman was founded in 1790 by George Sandeman, a Scottish businessman who established his wine business in London. Initially, the company started as a wine merchant, sourcing and selling wines from Portugal and Spain. However, it quickly expanded its operations and began producing its own wines. In the early 19th century, Sandeman became one of the first wine producers to brand its barrels with a unique mark, the Sandeman "Don" logo. This distinctive logo, featuring a silhouette of a caped man known as "The Don," became synonymous with the Sandeman brand and helped differentiate its products in the market. Sandeman gained international recognition and success throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. The company played a significant role in promoting and popularizing port wine and sherry, particularly in the British market. Its wines were highly regarded for their quality and consistency. Over the years, Sandeman expanded its operations and acquired vineyards in the Douro Valley in Portugal and Jerez in Spain, where the company produced its own grapes for winemaking. The brand also diversified its portfolio, offering a range of port wines, sherries, and other fortified wines. Sandeman's success and commitment to quality led to numerous awards and accolades. The brand's distinct logo and image featuring "The Don" became iconic and contributed to the brand's recognition and popularity. Today, Sandeman continues to produce and distribute its wines globally, maintaining its reputation as a leading producer of port wine and sherry. While the exact ownership and management structure may have evolved over time, the Sandeman brand remains synonymous with quality fortified wines and a rich history dating back over two centuries.
