This wine usually falls somewhere in the middle of the Riserva continuum (starting with the most lithe and elegant wine and ending with the most powerful) presented by Produttori del Barbaresco in this knockout series of nine single-vineyard expressions. The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is another personal favorite. This group of Ovello, Rio Sordo, Asili and Rabajà (that sweet spot of neighboring vineyard sites in Barbaresco) is especially profound in 2015, striking a careful balance between elegance against power. The Rio Sordo offers tight and sharp fruit complete with a little tannic pinch or crunch on the close. Production is 13,333 bottles.

The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo comes across as quite powerful and dense today. A few months ago it was more refined, but today I get the impression of a wine that is growing in bottle. As always, the Rio Sordo is a Barbaresco of textural suaveness and early appeal, relative to the more structured wines in this range. Spice, new leather, tobacco and cedar meld into the supple, resonant finish.

The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is one of the more refined, delicate wines in this range. The wine's small-ish scale and open-knit feel make it easy to drink with minimal cellaring. Even so, the 2015 has good energy and impeccable overall balance. Spice, leather, cedar, tobacco and menthol add lovely aromatic top notes. It will be interesting to see how the 2015 develops over time.

At first, Nebbiolo grapes grown in Barbaresco were often sold to producers of Barolo red wine, or simply labeled "Nebbiolo di Barbaresco" on the wine label. Barbaresco remained largely unknown at the time. In 1894, Domizio Cavazza, Rector of the Royal Enological School in Alba, created the first winemaking cooperative "Cantine Sociali" and brought together nine Barbaresco vineyard owners Come to the co-op for brewing. However, due to the influence of fascist forces, the brewing cooperative was forced to close in 1930. Until 1958, the local priest realized that the only way to survive for small vineyards was to work together, so he gathered 19 grape growers together to create the Barbaresco Production Alliance, dedicated to improving Barbaresco and its production. the reputation of the wine. The Barbaresco region has a continental climate, with hot summers, cold and snowy winters, and a large temperature difference between day and night, which is conducive to the accumulation of more flavor substances in the grapes. The Barbaresco Production Alliance has more than 100 hectares of high-quality Nebbiolo vineyards, growing on steep hillsides between 200 and 400 meters above sea level, with plenty of sunshine, and the soil is mainly composed of limestone and clay, which is conducive to the production of complex taste and tannin.
