Pale lemon-gold in color, the 2020 Filhot opens with fragrant notions of musk perfume, acacia honey and paraffin wax, over a core of white peaches, poached pears and spice cake. The palate delivers a zippy backbone to counter the juicy peaches and pears flavors layers with a satiny texture and spicy kick to the finish.

robert_parker 2019

Rating: 93 –95

Pale lemon-gold in color, the 2019 Filhot leaps from the glass with wonderfully pure notes of lime cordial, lemon meringue pie and orange blossoms with a spicy undercurrent of fresh ginger, coriander seed and allspice. The palate delivers a beautiful satiny texture with loads of honeyed citrus fruit layers and an invigorating line of freshness, finishing long with a seriously spicy kick.

Rating: 94 –94

This wine wasn't showing too well when I tasted it from barrel during Primeurs, but it has really blossomed now that it is in bottle! The 2017 Filhot leaps from the glass with exotic notions of mango peel, pineapple upside-down cake and passion fruit with nuances of crème caramel and tangerine peel plus a fragrant floral waft in the background. Concentrated and complex, the multi-layered palate features a lively line of acidity offering compelling tension. It finishes long and earthy/minerally.

robert_parker 2017

The nose of the 2017 Filhot is carrying a fair bit of mushroom notes over a core of baked apples and fallen leaves. The palate is rich, tart and a little too fungi for me.

robert_parker 2016

Rating: 88 –90

The 2016 Château Filhot has a clean but rather simplistic bouquet with light waxy aromas, but it needs more botrytis to come through. The palate is well balanced with more body than the 2015 last year, and here there is more botrytis with quite a pretty, lightly spiced finish. It is probably the best Filhot that I have tasted in recent years, even if I still believe there is room for improvement.

robert_parker 2015

Rating: 90 –90

The 2015 Château Filhot was just missing the same fruit intensity as its peers, as if this Sauternes had nipped out the door when I came to visit. Where are you? The palate is actually better with light and breezy honeyed fruit mixed with orange pith and quince, developing more depth toward the precise finish. Give this a few years to allow those aromatics to come back because I am sure they will.

robert_parker 2012

Rating: 87 –87

Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. The 2012 Château Filhot has a simple, rather Germanic scented bouquet (think of a ten-year-old Auslese from a half-decent producer.) The palate is actually better than the nose: viscous in texture with honeyed citrus fruit and tangy orange peel, satisfactory length and precision right to the end. Not a bad Sauternes and certainly an accomplishment in what was a very difficult vintage, even if I would not leave it long-term.

robert_parker 2012

Rating: 84 –86

There is a very Germanic character to the nose of the 2012 Filhot and there appears to be little botytized fruit this year. The palate is actually better than the nose and is fresh and balanced, although it seems quite thin and lacks substance towards the finish.

robert_parker 2011

Rating: 88 –88

Tasted blind at the Sauternes 2011 horizontal tasting. The Château Filhot is a commendable effort from a property that frustratingly tends to underperform. There is a strong petrol aroma on the nose of this Sauternes, detracting from its typicité even though there is fine delineation. The palate is crisp and fresh with an energetic entry, a keen line of acidity and a very pure, almost Auslese-like finish that has a long spicy finish that is just missing a little harmony and purity, and dried out slightly with time in the glass.

robert_parker 2011

Rating: 88 –90

Although recent vintages of Filhot have been disappointing, I am more optimistic about the 2011. There is an attractive nutty note on the bouquet that is crisp and defined. The palate is nicely balanced with fresh, honeyed fruit while the viscous finish lacquers the mouth with the chutzpah that has been absent of late. I hope that this Sauternes remains on course throughout its barrel maturation because Filhot needs to be up there with the greats. Drink 2014-2020.

robert_parker 2010

Rating: 86 –86

The Chateau Filhot 2010 has an attractive bouquet with good intensity, although the wood still requires another 12-18 months to fully enmesh with the heavily botrytized fruit. The palate has a very viscous opening, to wit, an assertive Sauternes wine that is powerful and refuses to stand back. There are notes of dried honey, lemon curd and mandarin, the finish missing a little clarity and cleanness. This is one of the better releases from Filhot in recent years, although there is still some way to go. Drink now-2025.

robert_parker 2010

Rating: 91 –91

Pale to medium lemon-gold in color, the 2010 Filhot is full-on gregarious with expressive notions of pineapple tart, mango pudding and musk perfume plus an undercurrent of key lime pie and candied ginger. Rich, full and marvelously layered, it has a racy backbone and beautifully textured, spicy finish.

robert_parker 2009

Rating: 87 –87

The 2009 Filhot is a little reductive at first with some free sulphur clouding the aromatics. After a period of aeration, it has a rather strange, adhesive-scented bouquet that is rather unattractive. The palate is viscous on the entry, but comes across as a little one-dimensional compared to its peers, with a simple finish. Drink now-2020.

robert_parker 2007

Rating: 85 –85

This has a simple, rather commercial pineapple scented bouquet with moderate definition, but certainly lacking some complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with good acidity, but lacking the requisite complexity and concentration on the finish commensurate with the 2007 vintage. Not a terrible Sauternes by any means, but I suspect the 2007 is below what this estate could achieve. Drink now.

robert_parker 2007

Rating: 85 –87

This is lacking some cohesion on the nose - the vivacity that other Sauternes have demonstrated. The palate is better with simple marmalade tinged fruit, a touch of honey and lemon and a linear finish that lacks a little length. A capable Sauternes without ambition. Hopefully it will improve by bottle. Drink 2010-2018. Tasted April 2008.

robert_parker 2005

Rating: 86 –86

Tasted blind at the 10-Year On Tasting in Sauternes. The 2005 Château Filhot has a simple pineapple and wax resin bouquet that needs just a little more precision. The palate is nicely balanced and straightforward, the acidity nicely judged, though just a tad conservative toward the finish. It represents a decent Sauternes that goes about its job with the minimum of fuss.

robert_parker 2005

Rating: 86 –86

A very simple nose that is certainly in need of more botrytized fruit although the palate has good poise with notes of bitter lemon, coconut and melted butter. Just a little sharp and angular towards the finish. Not bad. Tasted April 2007.

robert_parker 2005

Rating: 90 –90

Tasted single blind at Southwold. I had a feeling that this Filhot would improve in bottle…and it has. A little richer on the nose: heather, acacia honey with a touch of chalk dust with decent level of botrytis. The palate has a nice honeyed entry, good acidity, nice balance and poise with a spicy honeyed, dried apricot finish. Fine. Drink now-2020. Tasted January 2009.

robert_parker 2001

Rating: 85 –85

The Filhot 2001 has a light and rather herbaceous bouquet that seems anaemic compared to its peers. The palate is simple and light, gathers some momentum towards the finish but is rather one-dimensional given the quality of the vintage. Even blind, I knew this was Filhot, and resigned myself to another frustrating under-performance.

robert_parker 2001

Rating: 88 –89

Pineapple, citrus, sealing wax, and spice notes are noticeable in the aromatics and flavors of this finesse-styled, moderately sweet Sauternes. Elegant, with lively purity, medium body, and a reasonably long finish, it can be drunk now and over the next 9-10 years.

robert_parker 2001

Rating: 90 –90

Made in a light, fruity style emphasizing finesse and elegance, the 2001 Filhot exhibits abundant amounts of sweet pineapple and sealing wax-like characteristics, along with pure, clean flavors. Slightly sweet, it does not possess the body or power of the vintage’s bigger examples, but it is a refreshing, vibrant Sauternes to enjoy over the next 12-15 years.

robert_parker 2001

Rating: 84 –84

A light straw hue. The nose is dominated by obtrusive oak: a touch of wild flowers and lemon curd just in the background. Simple for a 2001: a great Sauternes vintage. The palate is medium-bodied, a little unbalanced with again, too much new oak in proportion to the concentration. A touch of citrus lemon, peach and lychee towards the finish. Moderate length. A bit ordinary. Tasted March 2007.

robert_parker 2001

Rating: 86 –88

robert_parker 1998

Rating: 79 –81

Quite muted nose that comes across as slightly synthetic. Medium bodied with moderate botrytis though very monotonous compared to the superior 1997. Fine but short term drinking only. Tasted September 2002.

robert_parker 1996

Rating: 88 –89

Copious amounts of marmalade and quince on the nose. Very harmonious palate with good acidity and globs of marmalade on the finish. A bit obvious but certainly one of the better Filhots. Tasted November 1999.

robert_parker 1990

Rating: 85 –87

Tasted a few times and never one of the better 1990 Sauternes. A lot of botrytis on the nose with a touch of coconut. Quite rich but lacks harmony and compromised with a displeasing metallic finish. Chunky and a little raw, lacking class. Tasted September 2002.

robert_parker 1990

Rating: 90 –90

Filhot, which prefers to tank rather than barrel ferment its wines, produced a 1990 that is clearly the best wine I have tasted from this estate. It exhibits gorgeously ripe, honeyed tropical fruit, an intense, medium to full-bodied personality, wonderful purity, fine acidity, plenty of botrytis, and a long, zesty finish. What makes this wine so appealing is its combination of richness, crisp acidity, liveliness, and zestiness.

robert_parker 1989

Rating: 88 –89

To me, better than 90. A lovely complex nose of honey, marmalade and quince. Good concentration on the palate that has moderate levels of botrytis, strong attack and length. A little straight-laced and conservative, but decent enough. Drink now. Tasted May 2000.

robert_parker 1989

Rating: 86 –86

The thick, very sweet, slightly heavy 1989 appears to be maturing at a fast pace. If drunk over the next 5-8 years it will provide an uncomplicated mouthful of sweet, candied fruit.

robert_parker 1988

Rating: 89 –91

Gold with green tints. Intense tropical fruits on the nose with honey and melon. An elegant palate that has fine acidity and note of mango and passion fruit. Moderate levels of botrytis. One of the better Filhots and comparable to the Filhot 1989. Good value as well. Tasted December 1998.

robert_parker 1988

Rating: 88 –88

The 1988 showed far better than in previous tastings. It displayed a wonderfully pure, honeyed pineapple-scented nose, rich, medium to full-bodied flavors, fine underlying acidity, an earthiness that added to the wine's complexity, and a clean, rich, crisp finish. Drinkable now, it should continue to evolve gracefully for 10-15 years.

robert_parker 1986

Rating: 87 –87

The 1986 is the best Filhot in my memory. The light golden color is followed by a wine with a floral, pineapple, and tropical fruit-scented bouquet, medium body, as well as lovely, elegant, and brilliantly pure, botrytised, lively flavors. Just medium sweet, this wine could be served as an aperitif wine. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 3/90.

robert_parker 1985

Rating: 78 –78

Extremely sweet to the point of being cloying, with unstructured, flabby, fat flavors, this is a straightforward, indifferent style of Sauternes that lacks a center point and focus. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 3/90.

robert_parker 1983

Rating: 82 –84

Dark golden/yellow hue. An intense nose of honey and marmalade with evidence of little botrytis. Lacks definition on the palate that has notes of marmalade and dried apricot. Fades at the finish. A good, if unremarkable Filhot. Drinking now. Tasted May 2002.

robert_parker 1983

Rating: 83 –83

This is an attractive, lighter-weight Sauternes without any evidence of serious botrytis. The wine possesses straightforward, flowery, ripe quasi-viscous flavors presented in a medium-bodied format. There is an overall lack of focus and complexity. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 4/86.

vinous 1990

Rating: 88 –88

The 1990 Filhot has a light brioche and orange blossom-scented bouquet, a touch of lanolin developing with time in the glass. This is very understated considering the growing season’s usual exuberance. The palate offers scents of butterscotch and caramel, a hint of orange pith on the entry. This is balanced if simple for a 1990 with a pointed, slightly short finish. It still has drinking pleasure to give even if it does not come from the top drawer of Sauternes this vintage. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Château Filhot.

robert_parker 2022

Rating: 89 –89

The 2022 Filhot offers up aromas of lemon, confit citrus, herbs and spring blossom. Moderately weighted and tense, it’s straight with a sweet, heavy mid-palate that segues into an incisive, lively palate. It lacks flesh and vibrancy for a Sauternes. This is a blend of 50% Sémillon, 40% Sauvignon and 10% Muscadelle.

robert_parker 2014

Rating: 85 –87

The Château Filhot 2014 is a blend of 60% Sémillon, 36% Sauvignon Bland and 4% Muscadelle, with 135 grams per liter residual sugar. It had to follow some mighty fine Sauternes and Barsacs in my tasting and regrettably its deficiencies on the nose were all too obvious: a lack of fruit and intensity, a little “wishy-washy” for want of a better word. The palate is slightly better. The entry is a little shrill with plenty of citric fruit, but is lacks harmony and viscosity, lacks a sense of conviction. I am convinced that there is simply too much reliance on Sauvignon Blanc when Sémillon would serve it better. As such, the Filhot comeback will have to wait.

robert_parker 2015

Rating: 89 –91

The 2015 Filhot was showing just a little reduction on the nose when I tasted it. The palate feels balanced, fresh and clean in the mouth, a little muted at first but with a few swirls it finds its voice, and I appreciate that dab of spice on the finish. This should come together by the time of bottling and it may warrant a higher mark.

robert_parker 1998

Rating: 92 –92

Pale to medium gold in color, the 1998 Filhot is a little reticent on the nose but sports some exciting peach preserves and candied orange peel notes with hints of beeswax and fungi. The palate offers beautiful balance and quite a lot of depth, with a racy acid line giving a refreshing lift to the finish.

robert_parker 2009

Rating: 94 –94

The pale gold colored 2009 Filhot bursts from the glass with notions of baked pineapple and spicy apple pie, honey nut, crème caramel and candied ginger. The palate reveals beautiful harmony, offering a relatively elegant style with great freshness and vibrancy, finishing with fantastic length.

robert_parker 2016

Rating: 92 –92

Pale to medium lemon-gold in color, the 2016 Filhot gives pronounced notes of guava, pineapple upside down cake, marzipan, musk perfume, Manuka honey and allspice with a hint of crème brûlée. Full, rich and concentrated, a lovely line of freshness cuts through the dense savory/sweet layers, finishing earthy.

robert_parker 2018

Rating: 91 –93

Pale to medium lemon-gold, the 2018 Filhot offers a serious, confident nose of well-defined lemon curd, pineapple upside-down cake and dried mangos with hints of cedar chest, Manuka honey and allspice. Full, rich and packed with powerful tropical fruit and spicy layers, it finishes long and opulent.

robert_parker 2013

Rating: 86 –88

Every year I want to find positive things to say about Chateau Filhot but find myself unable to. Here, the 2013 seems to be missing concentration on the nose, which is marked by an odd adhesive aroma. Things improve from here. The palate is nicely balanced, so there is a good start. The acidity is well-judged, but it needs to muster more complexity and length on the finish to be really convincing.

robert_parker 2000

Rating: 87 –87

This light green/gold-colored, medium-bodied, moderately sweet 2000 exhibits straightforward pear, pineapple, and peach flavors in its simple, one-dimensional personality. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
