Critic ratings

vinous 2014

Rating: 91 –91

The 2014 Carmes de Rieussec is a very pretty wine that can be enjoyed now. Candied lemon peel, coconut, pear, chamomile and white flowers meld together nicely in the glass. The Carmes shows the brighter profile that is characteristic of this early-harvested second wine from Rieussec, but with the textural breadth that is typical of the year.

Rating: 88 –91

Rieussec's second wine, the 2014 Carmes de Rieussec, shows just how compelling this vintage can be for Sauternes. The fresher side of the year comes through in a gorgeous wine made in a more moderately sweet style than the flagship. Scents of apricot jam, wild flowers, mint, coconut and lemon zest waft effortlessly from the glass. Totally nuanced in the glass, this delightful Sauternes is frankly better and more satisfying than the top wines at some other châteaus. The Carmes de Rieussec was made from fruit picked during the early part of the harvest, before botrytis arrived.

The Carmes de Rieussec 2014 is a blend of 92% Semillon and 4% each of Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. It has a very pure and honeyed bouquet that demonstrates superb intensity. The palate is unctuous on the entry with a touch of ginger, plenty of botrytised fruit but just missing the persistence on the finish that cuts away a little swiftly, just as the wine is getting into its stride. Still, this should be a capable deuxième vin.

The second wine of Rieussec, the 2013 Carmes de Rieussec is a blend of 83% Semillon, 9% Muscadelle and 8% Sauvignon Blanc. It has a lovely lemon curd, apricot and vanilla-scented nose with modest vigor. The palate has an edgy entry, with touches of citrus peel infusing the viscous fruit, and a dash of spice toward the finish.

Pale lemon-gold colored, the 2018 Carmes de Rieussec is a little youthfully mute to begin, offering glimpses at lemon meringue pie, lime cordial and beeswax scents with touches of baking bread and marzipan. The palate is appealingly rich and packed with citrus and spice layers, finishing long and honeyed.

Composed of 94% Semillon, 3% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle, the pale lemon-gold colored 2017 Carmes de Rieussec comes bounding out of the glass with rambunctious scents of candied citrus peel, pineapple tart, green mango and fresh apricots with hints of honeycomb, musk perfume and lime blossoms. The medium to full-bodied palate explodes with tropical and stone fruit flavors, offering seamless freshness and a long, honey-laced finish. Yum!

The 2017 Carmes de Rieussec, a blend of 94% Sémillon, 3% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle, opens with gorgeous lemon marmalade, peach preserves and preserved kumquat notes with touches of preserved mandarin peel and honeycomb. It fills the palate with rich, spiced apricot preserves notions, with a racy backbone to balance and a good, long finish.

Pale lemon in color, the 2016 Carmes de Rieussec features notes of candied orange peel and honey-drizzled peaches with touches of beeswax and lemon curd. The palate is rich with a lovely line of freshness cutting though the stone fruit layers, finishing on a spicy note.

Composed of 98% Sémillon and 2% Muscadelle, the 2016 Carmes de Rieussec is pale lemon-yellow in color and struts forth with bold peach preserves, lemon marmalade, acacia honey, lanolin and orange blossom scents with a waft of lemon curd. Rich and citrusy in the mouth, it offers great freshness to offset the decadent fruit, finishing on a lingering honeyed note.

The 2016 Carmes de Rieussec is a blend of 57% Semillon and 43% Sauvignon Blanc. It has an attractive bouquet with simple honey and yellow flower aromas tinged with vanilla pod. The palate is simple and quite linear, maybe missing some botrytis and viscosity towards the finish. Not bad, but I have encountered better Carmes de Rieussec in the past and the 2015 is much better.

Composed of 87% Sémillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc and 6% Muscadelle, the 2015 Carmes de Rieussec has a pale to medium golden color and a lovely nose of lemon tart, orange marmalade and preserved apricots with hints of musk perfume and candied ginger. Medium to full-bodied, richly fruited and with compelling savory and earthy layers intermingled with the citrus preserves, it finishes with great freshness and length.

The 2015 Carmes de Rieussec is a blend of 87% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc and 6% Muscadelle. It has a gorgeous lemon curd, honeysuckle and vanilla-scented bouquet that transcends what you consider to be a deuxième vin. The palate is very well balanced with a crisp line of acidity, very harmonious with fine weight and tension. This is a delightful Sauternes from the Rieussec team that should drink early, but clearly has the substance to age.

The 2015 Carmes de Rieussec has a gorgeous lemon curd, honey and apricot blossom-scented bouquet that seems to have gained a little more vivacity since I tasted it from barrel. The palate is viscous on the entry: apricot, orange pith, tangerine and touches of nougat, quite sweet and candied in the mouth but the acidity keeps everything on an even keel. Excellent.

Pale to medium gold colored, the 2009 Carmes de Rieussec opens with evolving honey-coated almonds, lemon pie and dried pineapple scents with hints of candied ginger, praline and cinnamon toast. Full-bodied and opulent in the mouth, it has compelling savory accents and just enough freshness to sustain the long, honey-nut finish.

The 2017 Carmes de Rieussec is dazzling. Here, too, the winemaking team captured a striking balance of richness and energy. Most second wines from Sauternes these days are light and floral. The Carmes has plenty of those qualities, but it is far from an easygoing Sauternes; rather it packs a serious punch. Lemon confit, passion fruit, exotic flowers and mint meld into the creamy, resonant finish.

vinous 2017

Rating: 90 –93

Lemon confit, white flowers and mint are all laced throughout the 2017 Carmes de Rieussec. Fresh and light on its feet, with notable vibrancy, the Carmes hits all the right notes. The balance here is simply unreal, especially for a second wine. Picking a bit earlier and an increased emphasis in freshness is felt throughout the Rieussec range, but it is especially felt in the Carmes, a mid-weight, super-finessed wine that offers tons of depth while also staying light on its feet.

vinous 2017

Rating: 89 –91

The 2017 Carmes de Rieussec, which has 100gm/L residual sugar, has a charming, lightly honeyed bouquet that is very pure. The palate is not as viscous as recent vintages that I have tasted, but well balanced with a keen thread of acidity that keeps the finish on its toes. This is a lighter Carmes de Rieussec than recent vintages and should be consumed within five or six years after bottling.

vinous 2016

Rating: 92 –92

The 2016 Carmes de Rieussec is absolutely gorgeous. Hints of passionfruit, pineapple and mint all run through this gracious Sauternes. Medium in body, open-knit and accessible, the 2016 is easy to drink and enjoy right now. The 2016 Carmes is an absolutely delicious second wine from Rieussec that emphasizes freshness and immediacy. Residual sugar is relatively modest at 120 grams per liter.

vinous 2016

Rating: 89 –89

The 2016 Carmes de Rieussec has a charming bouquet of lifted, honeyed fruit, frangipane and orange blossom aromas. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, offering candied orange peel mixed with peach and apricot and a generous but nicely focused finish. This is delicious now but should give several years of drinking pleasure.

vinous 2015

Rating: 93 –93

A wine of joy and pure pleasure, the 2015 Carmes de Rieussec is absolutely delicious. Rieussec's second wine is bright and lifted, yet shows plenty of depth in its pineapple, orange peel, mint, jasmine and lightly honeyed notes. Although the Grand Vin gets most of the attention at Rieussec, the Carmes is truly superb in 2015 and well worth taking a look at.

vinous 2015

Rating: 90 –93

The 2015 Carmes de Rieussec, the second wine from Rieussec, is delightful in this vintage. Orange peel, coconut and a host of tropical fruits are nicely delineated in this moderately sweet, refreshing Sauternes. Silky, perfumed and beautifully layered throughout, the Carmes is an ideal dessert wine for readers who find Sauternes too heavy or sweet. The Carmes is simple, uncomplicated and a real pleasure to taste. That's all there is to it.
