The 2016 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, from vines planted in 1950, was reduced to a single barrel this year, although Vincent Morey admitted that he was surprised to get anything at all from the vineyard. It has quite a rich bouquet because of the influence of the new wood, although there is sufficient fruit to back that up, and it remains well defined. The palate is rounded on the entry with tangerine and dried apricot notes, a fine bead of acidity, if missing some length similar to many white Burgundies this vintage.

The 2009 Batard-Montrachet presents a gorgeous fabric of white flowers, light honey and juicy peaches. The oak (60% new) gives the Batard an extra dimension of sweetness and volume that the other wines here don’t seem to have. Accordingly, this needs a few more years in bottle to come together. The finish retains gorgeous elements of creaminess in what is a relatively understated style of Batard, especially within the context of the year. Anticipated maturity: 2014+. Vincent Morey began harvesting his 2009s on September 10. The wines saw batonnage every two weeks. The malos were very fast, and were completed by January. The wines wre subsequently racked to steel and bottled in August 2010. I tasted all of the 2010s from barrel. It is a vintage I like very much here. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. The 2010 Batard-Montrachet is rich, powerful and very tightly wound. Vibrant mineral notes are woven into the intense, layered fruit but they are nearly buried by the wine’s intensity. Ideally, the 2010 needs another couple of years to fully come together. Today it is very much closed in on itself. Anticipated maturity: 2014+. Vincent Morey began harvesting on September 17th. All of the 2010s were bottled before the 2011 harvest. Morey told me he seeks to maintain freshness in his wines, and therefore sees nothing to gain from longer elevage. I also tasted a handful of highly attractive 2011s from barrel. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802
