Light orange-pink. Expressive, mineral-accented orange zest, red currant, nectarine and succulent floral and herb aromas take on a spicy nuance with air. Lively and sharply focused in the mouth, offering concentrated red berry, pit fruit, tangerine and honeysuckle flavors and a hint of tarragon. The mineral and floral notes drive an impressively long, precise finish that leaves white peach and spice notes behind. - Josh Raynolds

As always, this estate crafted one of the most perfumed and complex rosé wines in France. The 2023 Bandol Rose exhales aromas of spring flowers, guava, lemon, spices and iodine mingled with delicate licorice hints. Medium-bodied, textural and layered, it’s perfectly balanced with a fleshy core of fruit and bright acids, concluding with a long, mineral and iodine-inflected finish. Kudos!

A classic Bandol, the 2022 Bandol Rose reveals stunning aromas of grapefruit, spring flowers, guava, lemon and iodine. The wine on the palate is medium to full-bodied, combining a fleshy core of fruit and racy acids with impressive substance on the finish. It needs a couple of years in bottle, but you can already see the potential.

Not included in the blind tasting at the local syndicat, Tempier's 2021 Bandol Rose nevertheless looked good when I tasted it at the estate. It's a very fine, elegant example of Bandol rosé, with notes of passion fruit and pink grapefruit leading the way in a tightly knit, medium-bodied package that adds promising hints of white peach and anise on the lingering finish.

Domaine Tempier's 2014 Bandol Rose continue to show why it's considered one of the best rosés in the world. Made with a hefty chunky of Mourvedre, it offers beautifully crisp and precise notes of orange blossom, crushed rock, mineral water and white flower that flow seamlessly to a medium-bodied, balanced, lively and fresh style on the palate. While this doesn't have the heft of sheer fruit of a top Tavel, it has more tension and focus, and I suspect it will put on weight with another 3-4 months in bottle. In short, it's a beautiful Bandol rosé that delivers everything you could want from a rosé. It has the juiciness and freshness to drink nicely on its own or at the start of a meal, as well as the complexity and depth to handle any number of richer foods.

Still in tank at the end of February, Tempier's 2018 Bandol Rose marks another successful vintage for this consistent standout. It's light to medium-bodied, not overly ripe or rich, but all about balance and refreshment. Tangerine and melon aromas and flavors hit all the right notes, lingering on the already elegant finish.

Tempier's 2017 Bandol Rose continues to drink well. A blend of 55% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache and 20% Cinsault, it offers entrancing aromas of crushed stone, peach and raspberry on the nose. On the palate, it's silky, medium-bodied and intense, with plenty of bright, zesty lime on the long finish. My original blind-tasting notes include the query, "Too fruity?" but in retrospect, I suspect this just bodes well for the wine's potential longevity for those who like to cellar them.

Always one of the top 2-3 roses produced (from anywhere – and it’s priced as such), the 2012 Bandol Rose (50% Mourvedre, 28% Grenache, 20% Cinsault and the balance Carignan) has fantastic notes of rose petal, orange rind, citrus blossom and distinct minerality on the nose. Classy, elegant and yet beautifully textured and long, even showing some structure, it’s a knockout rose to drink with food over the coming 2-4 years. (It will evolve for much longer as well.)
One of the leading domaines in Bandol, Domaine Tempier is, without a doubt, the most visible producer from the appellation in the U.S. marketplace today. I think this is well-deserved (and a good thing for Bandol), as the wines are at the top of the hierarchy in terms of quality. The estate has been in the Peyraud family for generations and has a long, storied history that’s beautifully documented in Kermit Lynch’s newsletters and book, Adventures on the Wine Route (an absolute must read for any wine lover). The family is still going strong today, yet the wines are now made by Daniel Ravier. At this tasting, all of the wines showed brilliantly and possessed a surprising level of polish and texture, with no rusticity or coarseness at all. In addition to the wines I was able to review here, they also produce a white (60% Clairette, 19% Bourboulenc, 18% Ugni Blanc and the balance Marsanne), and a very limited red, the Cabassaou (95% Mourvedre, 4% Syrah and a splash of Cinsault).

Domaine Tempier's rose is one of the rare roses produced in the world today to actually have a cult following. Numerous friends await with anticipation each vintage's new release. They will not be disappointed by the pale peach-colored 1999.
Its complex red fruit and mineral-scented nose leads to a softly textured, medium to full-bodied character. Silky strawberries, raspberries, and spiced minerals make up this lovely rose's flavor profile. While it makes for an ideal aperitif, it has the versatility to make for a wonderful match with a wide variety of foods. Drink it over the next year.

Always one of my favorite estates, Domaine Tempier's Bandol Rose remains one of the world's reference points for how much flavor and character can be built into a rose wine. The 1996, which I tasted in Berkeley, and on three separate occasions in the southern Rhone Valley in July, is one of the leading candidates for the world's most hedonistic rose. The wine possesses a medium salmon color, a super nose of red fruits, kirsch, strawberries, and spice, tremendous fruit, surprising body and richness, and a silky smooth texture. This delicious rose, which coats the palate with flavor, will drink well for 8-12 months, but who has that much discipline.
This wine was tasted in May, 1997.
