Rating: 93 –93

The last vintage produced by longtime winemaker Michael Chelini, the 2018 Chardonnay offers up bits of struck flint, a faint smokiness and hints of burnt custard, plus lemon and lime. It's medium to full-bodied, round and mouth-filling but also zesty, taut and long with gentle phenolics on the finish. With only about 10% new oak used in this wine's élevage, it's a bit of an anachronism within Napa Valley.

Rating: 89 –89

A classic old-style California Chardonnay displaying citrus, lime oil, green apples, with plenty of acidity but very good flavors as well, this is California’s version of a French Chablis. They have been making Chardonnays since 1952, so they are clearly doing something right. This wine should evolve for at least 5-7 years, although some vintages last longer. Avoid their 2007 Syrah, which I found to be tart, desiccated, and mediocre. The same can be said of their 2007 red blend (90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot) which has prematurely aged, looking 20 years old and tasting like it was already 10 years old and drying out. Tel. Rating: 90 –90

The 1999 Chardonnay offers all that one would want in a high quality Chardonnay, including gin and tonic, lime-like notes, medium to full body, a tightly-wound style, good purity and balance, and intense fruit characteristics. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years. It will unquestionably last longer, but will it improve? I don't think so. This effort is a discreet, polite example that requires some introspection. Tel. Rating: 87 –87

The 1998 Chardonnay does not reveal the fruit purity or intensity of its younger sibling. High acids poke through notes of lemon zest, resulting in a more compressed, medium-bodied feel in the mouth. Nevertheless, it is a lively offering that readers who prefer lemon/lime-like notes in their Chardonnays will enjoy even more than I did. This effort is a discreet, polite example that requires some introspection. Tel. (707) 963-2636; Fax (707) 963-1831

The light straw-colored 1997 Chardonnay reveals a greenish hue (as do its siblings). It is medium-bodied, with tart acidity as well as a wonderful vibrancy and freshness along with tell-tale notes of under-ripe fruit, green apples, and a hint of lime. It should prove to be better balanced and longer-lived than the 1998, but I wonder if it will outlast the impressive 1999? Consume it over the next 5-6 years. This effort is a discreet, polite example that requires some introspection. Tel. (707) 963-2636; Fax (707) 963-1831

Rating: 87 –87

This crisp, old style California Chardonnay appears to be made in a non-malolactic style. It offers gobs of crisp, tart, lemony/apple-like fruit, medium to full body, excellent purity, and a vivacious, crisp, well-delineated personality. Just beginning to reveal some complexity, this wine should drink well for 2-4 years. Tel. (707) 963-2636

Rating: 89 –89

This renowned Chardonnay producer has fashioned a nearly impenetrable, backward style of Chardonnay, with high acidity, and considerable weight and richness on the palate. The subtle aromas of lemon butter, apples, minerals, and oak make for an elegant first impression. Beautifully pure and tightly strung, but rich and medium to full-bodied, this wine will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring; it should last for 5-6 years.
