Rating: 92 –92

The 2019 Timorasso Derthona Montemarzino is bright, transparent and super-expressive. Luca Roagna's Timorasso is one of the most refined versions I have tasted of Timorasso, which is usually a much more rustic white wine.

The 2018 Derthona Montemarzino is a pure expression of Timorasso. This white wine shows a light golden color, and it catches the ambient light. The bouquet is somewhat neutral, with Anjou pear, beeswax and yellow rose. There is a faint point of flint or struck match that dissipates quickly. Give this fascinating wine a few more years of cellar age to develop its bouquet and take on more volume. Only 2,820 bottles were produced.

The Roagna 2017 Derthona Montemarzino is a pure expression of the Timorasso grape, heralded as one of the most exciting combinations of grape and emerging territory to be found in Italy in recent years. From a hot vintage, this wine is abundant, rich and generous. It shows a luminous golden color with a combination of sweet and tart aromas. For example, there is Calabrian bergamot, orchard fruit and yellow rose. There are dustings of mineral and petrol like you might find in a Riesling. Fruit comes from a one-hectare plot in the Colli Tortonesi with very rocky soils at 400 meters above sea level. This wine has been produced since 2014 thanks to land that was acquired by one cousin from another cousin. Some 250 12-bottle cases were produced.

The 2016 Derthona Montemarzino is dedicated to Luca Roagna’s uncle, who passed in 2012. This is the third year this wine was made. Derthona is a new appellation in Piedmont (formerly Colli Toronesi) focused on the up-and-coming Timorasso grape. This variety has pronounced acidity, great for longer aging, and you can sense that this new release needs a little more time in the bottle to flesh out and spread its wings. At this young stage, it is characterized by bright citrus, squeezed lime and fresh garden herb. Give it another two or three years in the bottle.

With only 3,133 bottles produced, the Roagna 2020 Derthona Montemarzino is an interesting and unusual wine. There is an almost herbal preface with minty apple and lemon thyme that cedes to softer white peach and quince. Timorasso gains in complexity as it ages, picking up elegant petroleum-like nuances and dusty mineral sensations with time. The 2020 vintage was warm, so it goes to stand that the wine is all about primary fruit now. But it should be worthwhile to come back and visit this bottle in five or 10 years' time.
