The 2017 Poggio alle Gazze brings together the natural richness of the year with the lift of Sauvignon Blanc. Orchard fruit, lime, mint and white flowers add brightness to this impeccably balanced, refreshing white from Tenuta dell' Ornellaia. The blend is 81% Sauvignon Blanc, 10% Vermentino, 6% Viogner and 3% Verdicchio. Drink it over the next few years.

Poggio alle Gazze, Ornellaia's Sauvignon Blanc-based white, is especially fine in 2018. Lemon confit, sage, mint and bright floral notes are so finely cut. I would prefer to drink it on the early side in order to capture all of that vibrancy and energy.

Made mostly with Sauvignon Blanc, the 2021 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia reveals a luminous and transparent appearance with fresh aromas of passion fruit, citrus and green apple. The wine is very focused in this classic vintage with upfront acidity and pretty mineral notes. Ornellaia is one of the only estates to offer a Sauvignon Blanc in this part of Tuscany. This bottle is especially popular at the many local fish restaurants along the coast.

The Ornellaia 2020 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia is a delightfully fresh and tonic white blend made primarily with Sauvignon Blanc supplemented by Vermentino and Viognier. It pours from the bottle with crystalline luminosity and displays a full range of varietal flavors from lime to lemon grass, white flower and acacia. Despite the hot growing season, the wine's acidity is vibrant and bright.

Sauvignon Blanc is complemented with smaller parts Vermentino and Viognier to produce the 2019 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia. This remains one of the great, fresh and easy-drinking whites of the Tuscan Coast, and historically, it has a leg up on most of the newcomer Vermentinos that are so popular now. Indeed, this was the precursor and a direct link to the gastronomy of its birthplace, which is so heavily driven by the catch of the day netted by local fisherman. Floral and exotic fruit tones rise from the pretty bouquet with shadings of green papaya and citrus. About one-half of the total sees some oak aging, and the rest goes into steel vat and cement. The wine is luminous and bright with lots of energy and freshness.

The Ornellaia 2018 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia is a blend of 83% Sauvignon Blanc, 11% Vermentino and 6% Viognier. The wine pours from the bottle with a light golden hue and produces aromas of stone fruit, Golden Delicious apple and honeydew melon. To me, this vintage doesn't quite have the vibrant, tonic zest that we've seen previously, like in the 2016 edition. The sparkle is there, but it doesn't shine as bright perhaps because the richness of the Viognier seems to shows more weight here. The wine is fermented in new and used barrique (for about 50% of the the total), and stainless steel and cement are used for the other half. No malolactic fermentation occurs. The wine then goes into wood for six months. Some 35,000 bottles were made, and this vintage was released in March 2020.

Based mostly on Sauvignon Blanc, the 2015 Poggio alla Gazze is a light and fragrant wine with just enough texture and creaminess at the back to pair with more sophisticated seafood dishes such as sea bream baked in a salt crust. This vintage shows a fruit-forward disposition and ripe fruit but offers less in terms of tension and focus.

The 2014 Poggio Alle Gazze is a lean and streamlined white wine that would pair beautifully next to informal seafood platters or a light salad lunch. The bouquet is redolent of lime, green sage and citrus. A pretty layer of crushed mineral or oyster shell appears at the back.

The 2012 Poggio Alle Gazze is predominately Sauvignon Blanc with a smaller component of Viognier. The wine sings in a soft, caressing voice with peach citrus, wild sage, balanced almond and green olive. It offers more in terms of crispness and freshness than it does body or heft.

A beautiful expression of Sauvignon Blanc (with 7% Viognier) from coastal Tuscany, the 2011 Poggio alle Gazze dell-Ornellaia opens with seamless integration and incredible smoothness. The wine is beautifully redolent of apricot, exotic fruit and bright citrus. There are no sharp edges here: It flows over the palate like silken sheets. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2015. This year Ornellaia celebrates the 25th anniversary of its flagship wine, the eponymous Ornellaia (1988-2013). General Director Leonardo Raspini and his team decide to celebrate with a commemorative edition of the wine packaged in an etched bottle with gold lettering. The 2009 Poggio alle Gazze Milleviti (Sauvignon Blanc) shows off layers of expressive fruit and a rich, textured personality. The 2009 isn’t especially varietally expressive, but makes up for that with superb elegance and finesse from start to finish. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014. This is another strong set of wines from Tenuta dell’Ornellaia. The 2008 Ornellaia is back to its usual high level after a slightly perplexing 2007, while the 2008 Masseto is another in a fine line of vintages for this Tuscan icon. Readers should be on the lookout for a complete vertical of Masseto, back to the inaugural 1986 Il Merlot dell’Ornellaia, which will be posted on www.erobertparker.com in the coming weeks. Needless to say, it was an amazing tasting. Importer: Folio Fine Wine Partners, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 256-2700

The estate’s 2008 Poggio alle Gazze is Sauvignon that was partially fermented in barrel. It is easily one of the most elegant and refined whites to emerge from the Tuscan coast. An open-knit, inviting bouquet leads to fragrant peaches, mint and minerals as this caressing white opens up in the glass. Texturally beautiful and wonderfully expressive, the Poggio alle Gazze is a fabulous effort from Tenuta dell’Ornellaia. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016. The 2019 Poggio alle Gazze is bright and beautifully sculpted in this vintage. Lemon peel, white flowers, apple and exotic floral notes are nicely delineated. This is an especially perfumed edition of Poggio alle Gazze. Lime, green apple and exotic floral notes lead into the super-expressive finish.

The 2020 Poggio Alle Gazze is a bright, aromatic white to drink now and over the next few years. White flowers, sage, mint, pear and citrus are all finely delineated. There’s great energy and focus. The Sauvignon Blanc is quite expressive in the 2020. (Originally Published in March 2022)

Made mostly with 53% Sauvignon Blanc, 37% Vermentino, 6% Viognier, 2% Verdicchio and 2% Semillon, the 2022 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia is fragrant and fresh with aromas of lemongrass, sweet sage, honey and green apple that hover high in the glass. Pretty mineral notes of flint and crushed stone round it off. This is a tart, easy-drinking white wine that would pair with the delicious fresh seafood catch of the day found along the Tuscan coast. The wine is partially aged in new and neutral oak and cement.

The 2017 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia takes a back seat compared to the more exuberant, intense and complex vintage to come immediately before this. I tasted the 2016 and 2017 releases side by side. This wine offers a lower aromatic threshold with dried flower and summer grass. Generally speaking, the wine offers less fruit and more dryness that directly reflects the dusty heat of the 2017 summer season. You can almost taste that dry summer heat in this Sauvignon Blanc-driven blend of white grapes. The wine's mouthfeel texture is also considerably slimmed down.

Rating: 92 –92

This is a terrific vintage for white wines along the Tuscan coast, and the 2016 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia absolutely hits all the high notes. The blend sees anywhere from 70% to 80% Sauvignon Blanc with Viognier and Vermentino in supporting roles. Every once in a while, a dash of Verdicchio is thrown in for good measure. Some 35,000 bottles are produced. This wine is beautifully snappy, tonic and fresh. The effect is especially successful in terms of the palate, where the wine revives and refreshes but not in a banal way. There is enough complexity here—with passion fruits, garden greens, spring flowers and sweet almonds—to keep your attention, sip after sip. This is a profoundly inviting and satisfying wine.

The 2010 Poggio alle Gazze is an attractive Sauvignon laced with sweet white peaches, pears and sage. Winemaker Axel Heinz uses some batonnage, which gives the wine lovely textural depth and richness, even though malolactic fermentation is blocked. Varietal aromatics and flavors are present in the background. Hints of ash, slate and crushed rocks linger on the pointed, nuanced finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. The 2009 vintage was not easy at Tenuta dell’Ornellaia because of the scorching hot summer. Readers may want to take a look at my video interview with Axel Heinz for more on the 2009 vintage.
