Critic ratings

vinous 2014

Rating: 93 –93

(these 80+-year-old vines, which Frédéric Barnier described as near the end of their lives, produced just over half of a normal crop in 2014 as they suffered through a hot, dry flowering): Very ripe, inviting aromas of yellow peach, butter and clove. Wonderfully rich, plush and sweet, but the ripe yellow peach fruit and creamy old-vines texture are enlivened by mineral lift. Finishes tactile and very long, with a strong impression of dry extract. A superb vintage for this consistently excellent wine bottling.

vinous 2017

Rating: 92 –94

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Garenne 1er Cru comes from 90-year-old vines. It has to shake off a touch of reduction at first, gradually opening to reveal scents of green apple, pear, orange zest and just a hint of white chocolate. The palate is well balanced with fine salinity on the entry. I admire the energy given off by this nascent Puligny. Very harmonious toward the finish, with superb salinity on the aftertaste. Excellent. (DIAM GC closure)
