The 2014 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru les Chenevottes has a clean and precise bouquet, very intense with apricot and orange blossom that instantly seduces. The palate is crisp and taut, fine salinity here with edgy citrus fruit segueing into almond and blood orange on the tender finish. This is very fine, articulating its terroir with a touch more detail than others at the moment.

Scents of honeyed peaches, white flowers and pastry cream introduce the 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes, a medium to full-bodied, glossy and expressive wine with a broad textural attack but a tangy, tight-knit core and a mineral finish. The contrast is typical of Chenevottes.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru les Chenevottes 2011 from Jean-Noël Gagnard has an exquisite and pure bouquet with orange blossom, lemon zest and hints of apricot developing with aeration. This is very well defined and the oak is deftly integrated. The palate is nicely poised with hints of tangerine and apricot. It is much more reserved than the nose intimates and it perhaps cuts away a little swiftly on the slightly honeyed finish, but this has potential to evolve into something quite compelling.

The 2013 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru les Chenevottes has a refined bouquet in the making: touches of marmalade and quince joining the citrus fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin. It comes across as being a little austere at first, but it branches out nicely with lime and orange rind notes. There is moderate weight in the mouth, while it remains a little conservative on the finish. It may warrant a higher score after bottling - this may have been nervous on the day.

Almond cookies and spice cake can be discerned in the aromatics of the 1999 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes (86-87). Light to medium-bodied, well-made, and detailed, it is a fresh pear and citrus-flavored wine. Well-balanced and silky-textured, it should be at its peak of maturity over the next 4-5 years.

The 2002 Chassagne-Montrachet Chenevottes offers pears and apples. Lush, supple, and deep, this is a satiny-textured, light to medium-bodied wine with pear and lime flavors. Projected maturity: now-2010.
Caroline Lestime, this estate’s director and the daughter of Jean-Noel Gagnard, believes that “people are expecting too much from 2002, though it is a very rich vintage with better ripeness than either 2000 or 2001, especially in the reds, which have excellent balance.” Madame Lestime began harvesting on the 19th of September, starting with her parcel of Batard-Montrachet, which came in at 14% natural potential alcohol.

The Chassagne Montrachet Les Chenevottes is a very lively wine. It boasts steely, fresh aromas and flavors with a touch of citrus fruits and a deep minerally core. Silky-textured and medium-bodied, it has an anticipated maturity of 1999-2005. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. Ratings with a range of scores in parentheses indicate the wine was tasted from cask, not bottle.

Displaying concentrated red currant and grapefruit zest aromas, the Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes is a ripe, medium-bodied, and highly delineated wine filled with slate, minerals, and flint. This extremely concentrated offering possesses superb richness as well as strident balancing acidity and an admirable persistence on the finish. It will require cellaring. Projected maturity: 2002-2007. The rating, with the range of scores in parentheses, indicates the wine was tasted from cask, not bottle.
Jean-Noel Gagnard's brilliant 1996s will require patience as they have bracing acidity. These are rich, ripe and extremely well-made wines that, with time, will provide remarkable complexity, minerality, and, most importantly, pleasure.

The 1997 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes has a flower and clay-scented nose. This is a rich and dense wine with excellent breadth, tangy pears and apples, as well as a toast and earth-like flavors. It lacks the depth and complexity of a great wine yet is delicious, and eminently satisfying. Drink it over the next 4 years.
