Critic ratings

vinous 2019

Rating: 93 –93

The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has the most backward nose of the domaine’s Premier Cru. Les Caillerets demands the most coaxing, opening almost reluctantly with crushed rock, pressed yellow flowers and lemon verbena scents. The palate is taut and linear, very fresh and focused. The propitious terroir really shows though here, with a brisk and lightly spiced, complex finish. Very persistent in the mouth, this is a superb showing that may warrant a higher score in the future.

The 2014 Chassagne Montrachet 1Er Cru les Caillerets has a very detailed, stony, slightly austere bouquet that really articulates the limestone terroir with style. The palate is crisp and taut on the entry with wonderful salinity, very well balanced with a hint of peach and lime coming through on the finish. As I anticipated given this vineyard's performance at other domaines, this is one of the best premier crus from the domaine.

The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets has a more backward and austere bouquet, perhaps the one closest to 2014 in style - fine mineralité here. The palate is well balanced with touches of white peach, lemongrass and citrus peel. I like the energy and poise here, and it should drink well for 8-10 years.

Rating: 93 –93

The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets was showing very well, offering up aromas of ripe citrus oil, crisp green apple and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pure and incisive palate that's nicely intense and concentrated, with tangy acids and a long, chalky finish.

The 2013 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru les Caillerets has a clean and pure bouquet, hints of melted butter and mint lending the aromatics another twist. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh, struck through with a crisp line of acidity so that it feels citric in the mouth, sour lemon and fresh pear on the minerally finish. There is a lot of nascent energy here that bodes well for the future.

Lots of pie crust, ginger and candied lemon. Open. Dried apricot. Full and layered with so much fruit and intensity. Drink now.
