vinous 2018

Rating: 88 –88

The 2018 Bourgogne Blanc has a pretty bouquet of lime and orange blossom aromas. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity. Not overly complex, but I appreciate the lemon curd and orange pith notes on the finish. Enjoy over the next two to four years.

Aromas of beeswax, chamomile, red apples and freshly baked bread introduce Gouges's 2016 Bourgogne Pinot Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, satiny-textured wine with an ample, fleshy attack, succulent acids and a precise, flavorful finish. This is a characterful Bourgogne that surpasses expectations of its appellation; it's well worth seeking out.

The 2015 Bourgogne Pinot Blanc has an uninhibited pineapple and mango-scented bouquet - a bit of a tropical party going on here! The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, pleasing balance and a touch of spice on the finish. It's just a fun, easy-drinking Pinot Blanc.

The 2013 Bourgogne Pinot Blanc spent eight months in barrels and then transferred into stainless steel where it finished its malolactic. It has a slightly smoky nose with just a touch of walnut developing in the glass. The palate is nicely balanced, simple and easy-drinking with a pleasant spice-tinged finish.

Finishing with Gouges’ two white wines, the 2012 Bourgogne Pinot Blanc has a clean fresh grapefruit-scented bouquet that is simple and charming. The palate is nicely balanced with melon and pithy fruit, good acidity but a simple, quaffing finish. Drink this over the next two or three years. It was a pleasure to meet up with young Gregory Gouges at their picturesque winery in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges. He is the 4th generation winemaker from a family that is synonymous with Nuits-Saint-Georges, a legacy to live up to and to continue. He is quietly but emphatically going about it his own way. Even though during our initial exchange he was keen to stress that while he wanted to put his own mark on their wines, he added that he has no intention of changing the style of Henri Gouges that was run so successfully by his father Pierre and his uncle Christian. In bygone times these were wines built out of iron girders and grit. I still vividly recall a 1945 Clos des Porrets that was akin to drinking a fossil, ossified by time, as stubborn now as it must have been back then. To be frank, it was impressive rather than pleasurable. I think this is what Gregory has sought to change – to make the domaine’s ones more approachable and less curmudgeonly. One of the most important renovations has been the brand new gravity-fed winery. Gregory felt that the fruit was being manhandled excessively thought pumps. Nowadays the fruit is loaded from the upper tier into what is referred to as a “wagon”, a steel vessel suspended over the concrete vats that gently drops the fruit inside. The barrel cellar lies below, one of the very few stocked with mouth-watering ancient vintages dating back to 1919. Tasting through the domaine’s 2012s is a stimulating intellectual exercise, a lesson in terroir. The harvest commenced on September 25, and the since the vineyard holdings are in close proximity, it is undertaken rapidly since all the parcels with have achieved ripeness, so it is a case of gathering the grapes at that optimal moment. All the fruit is de-stemmed since Gregory finds their use risky and would rather obtain matiere from fruit and tannins. All the crus undergo almost identical vinification and are uniformly aged in 20% new oak from Sirigues. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. Sporting a fresh, tangy nose of white fruits and currants, the light-bodied 2003 Bourgogne Pinot Blanc is a lively, expressive effort with red currant flavors. Tannin reminiscent of red wines can be discerned in its finish. Drink it over the next 2 years. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802

About

We find here the cépage of white Pinot, 100% coming from the “massal selection” of Henri Gouges, the “Pinot Gouges”, after the discovery of white grapes on a vine plant of Pinot Noir. This 0,7 hectare parcel is located around 375 meters in altitude on the plateau which overcomes the Côte de Nuits. Planted on a shallow and rocky soil, made of red clay, it produces pure and aromatic wines.
