vinous 2007

Rating: 93 –93

The 2007 Extra Brut Rosé Celebris is wonderfully silky, polished and refined. The flavors are bright and lifted throughout, reflecting the predominance of Chardonnay in the blend. Cranberry, white pepper, mint and crushed rocks all give the 2007 much of its translucence and weightless energy. The finish is dry, salivating and tense. In other words; classic Gosset. This is a terrific showing. The 2007 is 59% Chardonnay and 41% Pinot Noir from vineyards in Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Vertus, Aÿ and Bouzy.

The 2003 Extra Brut Rose Celebris is another tight, powerful wine, but with air, the wine’s expansive core of perfumed fruit emerges. This is a fairly rich, weighty style of Champagne that is best enjoyed with food, but it is compelling juice even on its own. The wine possesses gorgeous length and a long, inviting finish that is simply impossible to resist. The 2003 Extra Brut Rose Celebris is 68% Chardonnay and 32% Pinot Noir, with the addition of 7% still red wines from Ambonnay and Bouzy. The cork is labeled C 7203, and this bottle was disgorged in February, 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020. I was extremely impressed with the wines I tasted from Gosset. The house style is one of finely-sculpted wines that possess striking clarity and precision. Gosset favors oak aging for their top selections and malolactic fermentation is always blocked. The top of the line Celebris range sees very low dosage. From top to bottom this is an exceptional line-up from one of Champagne’s most historic houses. The 1998 Extra Brut Vintage Celebris is a beautifully focused, linear wine that sparkles on the palate with the essence of white peaches, pears, quince and flowers. This medium-bodied yet structured wine offers phenomenal persistence, along with chalky, minerally notes that give the wine its superb liveliness and sense of freshness. Like many wines in this line-up, the 1998 Extra Brut Vintage Celebris is a beautiful, contemplative wine that deserves serious attention. This is a great effort. The blend is 64% Chardonnay and 36% Pinot Noir. The cork is labeled C 7202, and this bottle was disgorged early December, 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020. Gosset's 2007 Celebris Rosé Extra-Brut is a blended rosé made from 59% Chardonnay (from Avize, Chouilly, Cramant and Vertus) and 41% Pinot Noir (Aÿ, Bouzy and Ambonnay) of which 7% is red wine. This precise and focused wine displays an apricot color and opens with a super precise and chalky bouquet of oyster shells and iodine intertwined with fine red berry and rose petal notes. Pure and salty on the palate, this is sharp and precise as a knife but also highly finessed, textured and fruity, with a very discreet creaminess and chalky grip on the refreshing finish. This is not just an exciting rosé full of finesse and elegance but also a great 2007 that can compete with the very best. Tasted in August 2018, from lot L6088120 with dosage of five grams per liter.

The brilliant 2007 Celebris Rosé Extra Brut might be better described as "œil de perdrix," so subtle is its hue; cellar master Odilon de Varine commented that the idea behind the wine was not so much to produce a rosé as to produce a Celebris with more depth and richness. The wine wafts from the glass with a lovely bouquet of yellow orchard fruit, beeswax, pain d'epices and clear honey, followed by a full-bodied, broad and crisply fleshy palate with a deep and tight-knit core, a bright spine of acidity and a long, mineral finish. To my palate, this is the finest of Gosset's current releases, and it's well worth a special effort to seek out.

Offering up aromas of honeycomb, warm biscuits, red berries and spices, the just-released 2008 Extra Brut Celebris Rosé is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a concentrated, even expansive mid-palate; but if this Celebris Rosé leads with its voluminous core of fruit, it's its tangy spine of acidity and taut structure that dominate the bone-dry finish. That structure will demand a bit of patience, but this is an impressive effort from Gosset.
