The Meursault Les Vireuils, revealing nuts, spicy oak, and gravel scents, is a well-crafted, silky, and medium-bodied wine with complex flavors of wild mushrooms, anise, hazelnuts, and charred oak. Projected maturity: 1999-2003.
The rating, with the range of scores in parentheses, indicates the wine was tasted from cask, not bottle.
I am extremely impressed with Castelnau's efforts, particularly considering it is only his second vintage. But he needs to get these wines in the bottle without eviscerating them - and that's the tricky part.

The sweet tea, vervena, and flower-scented 1997 Meursault Les Vireuils has an expressive, thick, medium-bodied character. This delicious wine offers silky layers of minerals, ripe pears, lees, and a refreshing touch of citrus fruits that last throughout its impressive finish. Projected maturity: now-2003.
