Rating: 89 –91

From two parcels, the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers 1er Cru has a generous bouquet of slightly smudged honey and clementine aromas, touches of tropical fruit emerging with time in the glass. The palate is well balanced with a slightly viscous opening and good concentration, although it needs a touch more nervosité toward the finish. Perhaps shaped by the warmth of the growing season, this is nevertheless a fine Chassagne.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru les Vergers 2011 from Genot-Boulanger has a very powerful, perhaps slightly rustic bouquet, with citrus peel, orange peel and apricot blossom that is well defined. The palate is rounded on the entry with a slightly viscous mouthfeel. Good weight in the mouth, but I feel it is just missing some finesse on the chewy finish.

The Chassagne-Montrachet Les Vergers, displaying liquid minerals and stones, is a well-proportioned, velvety, and medium-to-full-bodied wine with tons of chalk dust, gravel, earth, smoke, and grilled toast. Its powerful and concentrated flavors extend into its long and pure finish. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2005. The rating, with the range of scores in parentheses, indicates the wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. I am extremely impressed with Castelnau's efforts, particularly considering it is only his second vintage. But he needs to get these wines in the bottle without eviscerating them - and that's the tricky part.
