The 2009 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts is marvelous. There is a crystalline purity and transparency to the fruit that is striking. The Referts starts off quite understated then blossoms beautifully on the mid-palate, gaining volume and depth. The finish is textured and voluptuous. This is a beautiful, complete wine from Francois and Jacques Carillon. Anticipated maturity: 2013+. The 2010s are the first wines Francois Carillon has vinified on his own following the division of the family estate, Louis Carillon. I was very impressed with what I tasted, but, and perhaps even more importantly, deeply struck by the attention to detail, especially in the vineyards. All of the 2010s had completed their malos when I visited in late June, 2011 except for the Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet, which was impossible to read. Readers should note that there are two labels for the 2009s; Francois Carillon and Jacques Carillon. The brothers have divided the finished, bottled wines of that year and are each selling their respective portions of those wines. The wines in bottle are identical. For ease of reference I have duplicated the entries in our database so notes for the 2009s appear for both producers. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802

The 2012 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Les Referts comes from 38-year-old vines. It has an expressive bouquet with lifted orange blossom and mint aromas emerging from the glass. The palate has more depth and complexity than the Les Champs Gain with white peach and mango notes. It musters more conviction toward the finish, demonstrating satisfying length and tension. Very fine. Straight after visiting his brother Jacques, I crossed the road to visit Domaine Francois Carillon. Francois began working with his father Louis at the domaine in 1988. While Jacques only sources fruit from his own vines, Francois’s modus operandi is slightly different since, as well as his own share of inherited vines, he vinifies fruit from contracted growers. He adopts a prudent approach to oak, adamantly stating that he never uses more than 25% and he did not purchase any new wood in 2012. His was a decent set of 2012s, although in this vintage they did not quite achieve the rarefied heights of his brother’s portfolio that generally demonstrated more precision and mineralite. The 2013 Puligny-Montrachet les Referts 1er Cru has a very linear, mineral-driven, chalky bouquet cut from a similar cloth to the Folatieres ’13. The palate is crisp and tense on the entry with flinty, granitic notes marrying nicely with the citrus fruit and also a hint of pear and white peach to add another dimension on the finish. Excellent.
