Chardonnay is an underrated variety in Marlborough, but few do it as well there as Dog Point. The 2017 Chardonnay offers up refined aromas of toasted hazelnuts and cashews alongside grilled white peaches and pineapple. A bit brasher in the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and boldly flavored, finishing with lingering citrus flavors of tangerine and grapefruit.

Of the three 2018s in this year's lineup of releases, Dog Point's 2018 Chardonnay stands out as being the pick of the litter. Attractive notes of toasted nuts and grain join hints of grilled citrus on the nose, while the medium-bodied palate is less generous than some years, but it offers bright pineapple and citrus flavors, a silky mouthfeel, and a lingering finish.

The 2020 Chardonnay is reductive and flinty on the nose and leads with lashings of crushed nuts, curry leaf, cap gun, yellow flesh peach, salted apples and brine. In the mouth, the wine is mouthfilling and bony in the very best of ways, with rich fruit that provides a chorus through the finish. Is it so reductive and worked that it will polarize? Possibly. Probably. Do I love it? Yes. Horses for courses. This is classy wine with lots to touch and feel. I bet it ages well, too. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

The 2021 Chardonnay leads with preserved lemon on the nose along with freshly picked curry leaf, white peach and spring blossoms. In the mouth, the wine is elegant and layered, with quenching acidity and cleverly managed reduction. This is sophisticated in the extreme and, most importantly, quite restrained, with the power unveiled through the extended length of flavor. This is a superb wine, a joy. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

The 2015 Chardonnay is a smoky, toasty, medium to full-bodied effort marked by a terrific acid line. That grapefruit note provides the backbone over which riper notions of white peach, toasted hazelnut and pineapple rest. Zesty and refreshing, with a long, mouthwatering finish, this is a compelling example of Marlborough Chardonnay.

A blend of Mendoza and Clone 95, all wild-fermented in barrel with 15% new oak, the 2016 Chardonnay is a terrific effort. Struck flint and pencil shavings mark the nose, alongside toasted almonds, pineapple and melon notes. It's medium to full-bodied, with a silky texture and long, citrusy finish. It should age up to a decade.

The 2011 Chardonnay entices the nose with notes of honeyed apricots, pineapple paste and lemon tart highlighted by hints of cashews and brioche. Medium to full-bodied with a great concentration of tropical and nutty flavors, it has an uplifting line of racy acid and a long finish. Drink it now to 2019+.
