The 2016 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard comes from the original vines planted in 1971. It offers very pretty scents of crushed hazelnuts, dried chamomile and spring honey with a core of white peaches, yellow apples, toast, orange blossoms and a minerally undercurrent. The palate is light to medium-bodied, intense and super energetic with an addicting savory character and a long, layered finish.

The 2011 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard opens with scents of beeswax, gunflint, smoke and toast over a core of ripe peaches and bruised apples. It slowly, slowly fleshes out to hazelnut, honey, dried mushrooms and tree bark with touches of lime peel and stone—it really blossoms and gains flesh as it sits in the glass. The medium-bodied palate is savory and lightly tertiary, maintaining incredible acidity and finishing long with singular matcha character. This is in a lovely spot for drinking and should have plenty of life ahead.

The 2021 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is youthfully shy on the nose, taking plenty of air to segue from initial saline and roasted almond scents to deeper tones of yellow apples and meringue. The light-bodied palate has a satiny texture and balances expansive, nutty flavors with a foil of laser-like acidity. It has a long, mouth-coating finish and offers the concentration and structure to age well in bottle over the next decade or more. 114 cases were made.

Echoing the stellar Pinot Noir bottling, the 2022 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard offers a little bit of everything in an understated yet complete package. The nose is a radiant, focused combination of yellow fruits, pastry dough, sea salt and citrus blossoms. The palate is just rich enough while retaining admirable energy and focus, with superb delineation and tension throughout. The finish is stony and elegant, slowly building richness with time in the glass but never losing sight of its vibrant clarity.

Last of the Chardonnays, and my favorite of the lineup, the 2012 Chardonnay Sanford & Benedict Vineyard offers incredible purity and precision, with racy citrus, apple blossom and lychee aromas and flavors giving way to richer notes of rising bread, brioche and seawater-like saltiness with time in the glass. Coming from 40-year-old vines and aged 15 months in 25% new French oak, this medium-bodied, elegant, layered and thrillingly pure effort will continue to impress over the coming 4-5 years.
I loved these latest releases from Ryan Deovlet, and they make the most of the vintage. Looking at the Pinot Noirs, most see a little bit of whole clusters, and the new oak is kept to a minimum, with most seeing roughly 40%. These wines all play in the medium-bodied, classy and energetic end of the spectrum, and do it beautifully!
