Critic ratings

vinous 2020

Rating: 85 –85

The 2020 Mercurey Blanc offers overt peach and mango scents on the nose, lacking a little definition. The palate is balanced but rather simple and does not quite kick on towards the finish. So-so.

Rating: 88 –88

Bursting with scents of pear, peach, orange oil and toasted nuts, the 2018 Mercurey Blanc is medium-bodied, lively and expressive, with racy acids and chalky grip on the finish.

Rating: 89 –89

The 2019 Mercurey Blanc bursts with aromas of pear, green apple, white flowers and fresh bread. Medium to full-bodied, with bright acids and a saline finish, it saw only 5% new oak.

Rating: 87 –87

Aromas of honeyed apples and peaches introduce the 2016 Mercurey Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, ample wine that's generous and textural but somewhat fresher and better balanced than its 2015 counterpart. The domaine notes that separate harvesting teams for whites and reds now permit them to make optimal picking decisions for both colors without any compromise, though I suspect the white premiers crus are the priority.

There are fully 60,000 bottles of the 2017 Mercurey Blanc, a pretty wine that bursts from the glass with scents of pear, green apple and pastry cream, followed by a medium to full-bodied, pure and fleshy palate that's buttressed by racy acidity and concludes with a mouthwatering finish.

The Chateau de Chamirey's Mercurey Blanc has powerful malt-like scents intermingled with traces of milk chocolate on the nose. This butter and metal-flavored wine has a creamy texture, a medium body, and excellent balancing acidity to go along with its delightfully fat and ripe character. It will be at its best if drunk by 2001. The Chateau de Chamirey is owned by the Antonin Rodet negociant house. Imported by William Deutsch and Sons, Armonk, NY; Tel. (914) 273-1221.

This large domaine, owned by Maison Antonin Rodet's director, Bertrand Devillard, has 40 hectares (98.8 acres) planted with vines. Approximately one-fourth of the production is Chardonnay. The 1997 Mercurey has plump and sweet white fruit aromas. It is a thick, rich, and dense wine crammed with over-ripe pears and apples as well as hints of metallic flavors. It is not complex, yet has wonderful fruit and excellent purity of flavors. It should be drunk over the next 3 years. Imported by William Deutsch and Sons, Armonk, NY; Tel. (914) 273-1221.
