The debut Château d'Aiguilhe Blanc 2014 is pure Sauvignon Blanc (well pure-ish since there might be a few Chardonnay interlopers!) It comes from young vines in their fourth leaf and it undergoes maturation in used barrels with no malolactic. There are just two barrels this year and it will not be released until 2016. It has a clean and pure bouquet, not complex, but with touches of sherbet developing behind. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry with good acidity, gooseberry and kiwi fruit on the mid-palate with a touch of spice on the finish. This bodes well for the forthcoming commercial release.

The 2015 Château d'Aiguilhe Blanc is a pure Sauvignon Blanc picked on September 11 that sees no new oak. Stephan Von Neipperg told me that it is inspired by Sancerre, hence just a little bâtonnage. It has a crisp and fresh bouquet that has a little more tension and complexity than the Clos Marsalette Blanc, and it is easy to see the Loire-influence coming through. The palate is well balanced with gooseberry and fresh lime notes, the acidity well judged and a touch of sea salt lingering on the slightly bitter (in an enjoyable way) finish. Enjoy this white Bordeaux-cum-Sancerre over the next 5-7 years.

The 2016 Chateau d'Aiguilhe Blanc is pure Sauvignon Blanc that is made in a Loire-style, picked on 15 September at 17 hectoliters per hectare. No oak is used. It has an engaging and lively bouquet with fine delineation: gooseberry, kiwi fruit and a touch of flint; I like the energy conveyed here. The palate is fresh on the entry with fine acidity, a touch of clementine and tangerine furnishing the finish that possesses just the right amount of tension to urge you back for another sip. This is excellent, especially considering that the vintage did not favor the dry whites.
