From 100-year-old vines, this Chenin Blanc is one cool customer. Aromas and flavors of beeswax, honeysuckle, tarragon and pineapple, then orchard fruit in the mouth. Lithe and full of finesse, with great acidity. The long finish delivers crushed stone and salt.

The 2010 Saumur Brezé has a lovely clear, pure and complex bouquet exhibiting almost exploding tropical fruit flavors along with quince, honey, ripe and potted pears, ginger, green grape berries and a spicy touch of oak. Full-bodied, very intense and mouth-filling but also very clear, vibrant, straightforward and refreshing, this persistently salty, delicately racy and piquant Chenin finishes with a gentle touch of oak and reveals a great aging potential. Drink now until 2030+.

Scents of lime and pineapple as well as a whiff of wood smoke in the nose of the Clos Rougeard 2007 Saumur Breze usher in a brightly citric, pungently smoky palate, underlain by chalky, alkaline traces. This offers a Chenin-typical instance of density allied to levity and refreshment, and it finishes with a remarkable tenacity, verve, and hard-to-describe minerality. As this stands in the glass you get more mysteries than answers – and that’s a good thing! I would not hesitate to plan on following it for a dozen if not more years, and Nadi Foucault is convinced it will gain an even clearer edge over the 2006 as the two evolve. The Foucaults Chenin from 40-50 year old vines in a clay-rich site continues to be in a class by itself in the Saumur appellation, deserving of the long elevage it receives and of time in the cellar. (Notes on the estate’s recent reds can be found in my parallel report on “Central Loire: King Cabernet.”) I lacked the opportunity to taste the 2009 or 2008 from barrel, but the imminent and current releases did not disappoint. Honeysuckle, lanolin, honeydew melon, and bittersweet floral perfume rise from the glass of Clos Rougeard 2006 Saumur Breze, which displays a cooling as well as soothing palate wreathed in high-toned herbs and floral essences; tinged with bitterness of quinine; and brimming with juicy melon. Alkaline and mollusk-like suggestions of things mineral lend mystery to a long finish. I would never have expected a wine with this almost Muscadet-like sense of buoyancy from its vintage. The Foucaults generally bottle only one white, from vines of forty years’ average age, planted in a clay-rich site on a retardant root stock that promotes harvesting Chenin after Cabernet, and this wine completely transcends other wines of Saumur appellation. (Occasionally – in years of truly widespread and noble rot – there is a sweet Coteaux Saumur from this small parcel instead.) Their 2005 Saumur Breze – tasted from new barrels – offered aromas and flavors of luscious peach, apple and honeydew melon splashed with sea spray and sprinkled with toasted almonds. With a remarkable combination of palpable mineral density, creaminess of texture, and satisfyingly succulent fruit juiciness, it finishes with gorgeous polish and length. (Lest one imagine that the Foucaults can do no wrong in my nostrils, I was quite underwhelmed with their 2001 white. The 2003 Saumur Breze displays aromas and flavors of quince preserves, citrus candy, flowers, toasted almond, and hints of caramel and dried plum. A zesty pungency grows on the palate, but the desiccated side of the wine does not preclude a certain juicy refreshment, nicely balanced by a creamy texture. The finish is both honeyed and zesty, with a hint of sweetness. (Lest one imagine that the Foucaults can do no wrong in my nostrils, I was quite underwhelmed with their 2001 white. An invigorating nose of lime zest, ocean breeze, and diverse flowers draws you into a glass of Clos Rougeard 2002 Saumur Breze. Clear, pure citrus, pit fruit, floral perfume and shimmering minerality combine for a show-stopping palate, and the profoundly chalky, meaty, and persistently floral, citric and pit-fruited finish exhibits a remarkable combination of clarity, buoyancy and sheer concentration. This will be worth following for at least another dozen years. (Lest one imagine that the Foucaults can do no wrong in my nostrils, I was quite underwhelmed with their 2001 white. For notes on the domaine’s reds, please consult the coverage of Cabernet Franc elsewhere in this report.) Importer: Louis/Dressner Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 334-8191

Vinified in new (20%) and up to four-year-old barrels, the 2015 Saumur Blanc Brézé exhibits a deep, intensely fruity and chalky, concentrated and elegant bouquet of perfectly ripe fruits, orange and grapefruit, as well as fine iodine notes. Silky, round and highly elegant on the palate, this is a rich and powerful, incredibly aromatic, round and finely iodine Chenin Blanc of exceptional quality. The wine is intensely fruity, juicy, ripe, refined and elegant, finely grippy and salty, and it finishes with lovely orange bitters. An impressive Chenin Blanc for hedonists, it has developed dramatically well in the last three years. 13.5% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in September 2021.

Serious complexity in this Chenin Blanc. Fresh golden apple at first, then pear, apricot jam and white pepper that carries throughout nicely. Gorgeous herbal notes on the midpalate, gliding to a long, salty, crushed stone finish.

Tangy and precise, the 2016 Brézé is a dry white wine that provides plenty of concentration and long length. It is round, yet has a firm line of tension that pierces its core. There's a lightly oxidative character here: cooked apples meets pastry, caramel and a hint of spice, evoking memories of a tarte tatin.

Clos Rougeard’s sole white is a Chenin Blanc from a plot of 100-year-old vines. Delicate and pretty nose of wildflowers, apricot blossoms and pear. Lively and full of juicy fruit on the palate, featuring green apple, melon and white grapefruit, leading to a lovely salty finish. Balanced and fresh. Has great potential but won’t be released for some time. Aged 18 months in oak, three months in bottle.

The phrase 'ripe yet precise' encapsulates the 2017 Brézé, Clos Rougeard's single and singular, dry white wine. It has two different fruit spectrums - there's citrus fruit from the north-facing vines and a later picked, riper, almost tropical, cooked pineapple character. Fermented in barrel, there are oak-derived vanilla flavors that join the fruit while a whiff of match stick indicates a lightly reductive character that needs air. It is round yet retains a bright, racy freshness that you often see in Brézé whites. Focused and fine, this has the substance and line to evolve gracefully.

Matured for one year in barrels, the 2018 Saumur Blanc Brézé offers up a reductive, slightly flinty bouquet and aromas of clove, ripe white fruits, spices, vanilla pod and herbs. Medium-bodied, round and supple, the wine is tense and layered with an ethereal finish enhanced by gastronomic bitterness.

Smoke, spices, ripe orchard fruits and herbs preface the 2017 Saumur Blanc Brézé, a medium to full-bodied, round and dense wine with bright acids and aromas of ginger and exotic fruits on the finish. This is a very classic Brézé that could age nicely over the next decade and more.
