Critic ratings

vinous 2015

Rating: 88 –88

The 2015 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru has a simple, rather anodyne bouquet that clearly lacks the complexity of its peers. The palate is uncomplicated, with a touch of bruised apple on the entry. There seems to be a little underripe fruit here, to the detriment of the finish, which pulls up short. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2015 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes-Dessus comes from the single hectare parcel of vines within the namesake lieu-dit. This clearly offers more energy and intensity on the nose than the Charmes with scents of hazelnut and grilled almond, a touch of lemongrass developing with time. The palate is very well balanced with a keen line of acidity, good energy, not as persistent as the 2014 that I tasted last year, but there is certainly good potential.

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes-Dessus has a sophisticated, terroir-driven bouquet with outstanding delineation and focus. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, saline and brisk in the mouth with an animated, lightly spiced finish. This is a very impressive showing from Château de Meursault, a property that has (finally) discovered how to really exploit their propitious vineyard holdings. Superb.

The 2014 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes-Dessus is almost exactly like the Meursault Charmes on the nose, except that there is a smidgen more delineation. It opens very nicely with apricot blossom and white peach scents, gaining vigor all the time. The palate is crisp and vibrant, saline in the mouth with a tensile, quite concentrated finish that feels long in the mouth. This is very impressive.

Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes-Dessus had a slightly muffled nose due to the sulfur dioxide but that soon blows off and there are pretty aromas underneath. The palate is, again, flat and oppressed by the sulfur here but again it develops in the glass. I find this some way behind the excellent 2014 Charmes that I tasted last year at the château. Tasted May 2016.
