The 2021 Malterdinger Alte Reben Chardonnay opens as a serious white that is too good and complex to be just a village wine. Sourced from vines between 30 and 66 years old and harvested in five or six days around September 20, the nose of the 2021 shows deep, intense and dense Chardonnay fruit intertwined with flinty/reductive and iodine notes of crushed limestone and a touch of iron. Full-bodied and rich on the palate this is a generous and textured yet also pure and utterly mineral Chardonnay with finely grained tannins and terroir-driven, tension-giving grip. This substantial wine reveals beautiful reduction that makes it a long-distance runner. It's absolutely impressive and already on a grand cru level in terms of tension, depth and length. Highly recommended! Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in November 2023.
