Rating: 95 –95

Consistently one of NZ's top Chards, Bell Hill's 2015 Chardonnay is a super effort. From aromas of pencil shavings, toasted hazelnuts, white peach and citrus to a medium-bodied palate packed with flavor and an impeccably silky texture, this is exemplary. Then the lemon and pastry-crust notes linger elegantly on the finish. Terrific, refined stuff.

Rating: 94 –94

Bell Hill's 2014 Chardonnay somehow manages to deliver ample weight and richness in the absence of overt fruit. Delicate notes of struck flint, pencil shavings (it saw 16% new French oak for 12 months) and wet stone expand in the mouth to deliver volume and flesh, but the fruit is restrained, offering subtle hints of white nectarine and pineapple on the mid-palate. Finally, peach and citrus notes burst free on the lingering finish. It's a fine, unique expression of New Zealand Chardonnay, just not representative of the overall market.

Rating: 93 –93

The 2013 Chardonnay has a refreshingly savory and mineral-scented nose, with notes of baking bread, yeast extract, toasted almonds, crushed stones and struck flint over a core of lemon meringue pie and grapefruit peel. Medium-bodied with a gorgeous satiny texture, it offers an understated, quiet intensity that is truly unique and compelling.

Rating: 92 –92

From a cool vintage and a small crop, the 2012 Chardonnay is lean and tight, with plenty of life ahead of it. Scents of toasted brioche and buttered cashews are backed by mixed citrus flavors of oranges, limes and grapefruit. This saw 25% new French oak; recent vintages have seen that proportion trimmed to 15% to 20%.

Rating: 96 –96

The 2011 Bell Hill Chardonnay unfolds with wonderfully expressive aromas of ripe apricots, green mango and pink grapefruit plus underlying notes of baking bread, ginger, cashews and crushed stones. The mouth explodes with well delineated stone fruit, exotic spice and subtle nut notes complimented by a beautiful satiny texture and concluding with a long multi-layered finish. Once again, Bell Hill: Wow!

Rating: 95 –95

The 2010 Chardonnay is quite closed at this youthful stage with citrusy lemon and grapefruit scents punctuated with ginger, toast and wet slate hints. Very taut and earthy/mineral in character in the mouth, this medium to full-bodied wine gives a good, long, citrus-laced finish. Drink it 2015 to 2022+. First planted in 1997, as the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines continue to mature on this incredibly placed remote vineyard and winery positioned on an old limestone quarry, Bell Hill just gets more and more exciting. Marcel Giesen and Sherwyn Veldhuizen have raised the bar high here, not just for New Zealand but for the world. Production is tiny and sadly even tinier in 2010 due to poor flowering. Only 1.5 barrels of the Chardonnay and 4 barrels of the Pinot Noir were produced in 2010 but the wines, in a word, rock. Anyone who truly wants to understand the potential of New Zealand’s greatest terroirs must find a bottle of Bell Hill. Importer: Ronnie Sanders, Vine Street Imports, Philadelphia, PA; tel. Rating: 93 –93

The 2009 Chardonnay is youthfully mute at this stage with delicate notes of orange blossom, lightly toasted bread, some oatmeal, under-ripe pineapple and lemon curd. The elegantly weighted palate provides great tension with seriously intense citrus and meal flavors and lively acidity. The finish is very long, contributing a suggestion of chalkiness to the layers. Consider drinking it 2013 to 2018+. Importer: Ronnie Sanders, Vine Street Imports, Philadelphia, PA; tel. (215) 533 9464; Terrell Wines, www.terrellwines.com

The 2009 Chardonnay gives notes of crushed cashews, meal and sulfides over a pink grapefruit and lemon tart core. Medium-bodied and very tightly knit and concentrated yet elegant in the mouth, it has a lovely silky texture and a very long finish. Drink it 2014 to 2020+. Rating: 91 –91

The 2008 Chardonnay presents lime juice and lemongrass notes over coriander seed plus touches of meal, peach blossom and yuzu zest. Very crisp and tight on the palate, it gives plenty of citrus fruit flavors and a long minerally finish. Drink it now to 2016+. Importer: Ronnie Sanders, Vine Street Imports, Philadelphia, PA; tel. Rating: 92 –92

Possessing a pretty perfume of honeysuckle, fresh peaches and coriander seeds, the 2008 Chardonnay reveals a chalky undercurrent with coaxing. Wonderfully intense and packed with tightly-wound flavors, it is still very youthful and has a lingering fruity finish with a touch of new oak poking through. Approachable now, it should drink to 2018+. robert_parker 2007

Rating: 92 –92

The 2007 Chardonnay is more nutty and tropical than the 2006 with a good core of muskmelon, guava and pineapple paste. Big, buxom and bold on the palate, it is a more gregarious reflection of this vineyard with a good, long, tropical fruit-laced finish. Drink it now to 2016. Rating: 92 –92

The 2006 Chardonnay reveals a moderate intensity of toast and straw aromas over a core of preserved lemon and lanolin plus a touch of warm grapefruit. Medium bodied, concentrated and still taut in the mouth, it gives mouth-filling stone fruit and toasted nut flavors and a long finish. Delicious now, it should cellar to 2015+. robert_parker 2006

Rating: 93 –93

The two and a half barrels of the 2006 Chardonnay is better with tangible limestone on the ebullient nose with touches of greengage and citrus fruits, the palate infused with subtle tropical fruits with some unresolved oak on the finish that will surely melt into the texture of this gorgeous Chardonnay. Located in an idyllic but isolated limestone quarry in the Weka Pass, North Canterbury; Marcel Giesen and Sherwyn Veldhuizen (plus resident cat) are a small, hands-on operation producing some outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from their high-density plantings on four limestone-rich blocks totaling just 0.88 hectares with two more blocks due to come on-line in the next two years. Although Bell Hill is a nascent entity, the winemakers know that patience is a virtue when it comes to eking out the best in their vines. What I can say is that even at this early stage, their wines contain that indefinable element called -soul- and that is a priceless virtue. Importer: Vine Street Imports, Philadelphia, PA; tel. Developing nicely into a lovely honeyed toast and brioche character, the 2006 Chardonnay has an exciting crushed stone/chalky undercurrent and a hint of orange peel. Still very youthful in the mouth with plenty of vibrant fruit, it is rich, concentrated and satiny in texture with a very long finish. Drink it now to 2016+. Only 747 bottles of the limestone and apple-scented 2004 Chardonnay were produced, showing judicious use of oak with an attractive but slightly simplistic Meursault-like finish.
