I tremendously enjoyed the marzipan, acacia blossom, and pineapple candy-filled aromatics of the 1997 Batard-Montrachet. This dense, rich, thick, yet surprisingly fresh wine exhibits flavors reminiscent of grilled toasts, white currants, lemon, and stones. Its finish is chalky and not as long as I would have hoped. Drink it over the next 5-6 years. A Patrick Lesec Selection (Paris Fax # 011-33-1-44-70-62-93), various American importers.

With a completely muted nose and a fabulous entry and mid-palate, the Batard Montrachet is an extremely hard wine to evaluate because of its back end: after a burst of buttered and roasted fruits with notes of candied berries, the wine drops off and leaves a bitterness in the mouth. Will this be resolved before bottling? This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. Ratings with a range of scores in parentheses indicate the wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Alain Bonnefoy, the winemaker at Domaine Bachelet-Ramonet, has recently committed himself to bottling his '95s without filtration. As my scores indicate, some of the wines fall just short of being outstanding. There is reason to believe, however, that I may be extolling the virtues of these wines in the near future. Why? The domaine is working closely with Patrick Lesec, a Paris-based wine broker who prods those estates he represents to adopt non-interventionist winemaking, lower yields, and later harvests. The Batard-Montrachet reveals a powerfully rich, spicy, and floral nose followed by a deep, dense, mouth-coating, medium-to-full-bodied, and velvety-textured personality. Candied peaches, poached and spiced pears, liquid minerals, and honeysuckle blossoms are found in this well-crafted and complex wine. Its long finish dissipates with notes of grilled oak. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2008. The score, noted on a range and in parentheses, indicates that the wine was tasted from barrel. Unlike many of the wines represented by Patrick Lesec, there are no separate "Patrick Lesec Selection" cuvees at this estate. Also, I was unable to taste this estate's 1996 Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet, often one of its better wines. Surprisingly, Alain Bonnefoy who was moving towards non-interventionist winemaking a year ago, decided that he would subject his 1996s to fining and filtering. The purity of this vintage's wines would leads me to ponder about why such "corrective" or "purifying" measures would be necessary. This being said, the 1996s are the finest wines I have tasted from Domaine Bachelet-Ramonet. There is a richness and density of fruit in these offerings that I have not previously experienced from this estate. If Bonnefoy continues to progress in his winemaking as he has over the last two or three years, Chassagne's small group of stars will have to make room for another member.
