The 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is showing some stem addition on the nose, and it works well: complex and very terroir-driven with endearing sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, good acidity, classic in style with hints of tobacco and white pepper towards the fresh and persistent finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Dark, bright, saturated red. Sexy resiny spices and a hint of orange zest lift the wine's youthfully unforthcoming dark fruit aromas. Subtly complex but a bit unforthcoming, with its sweet, rich dark berry and spice flavors cut by savory minerality. A distinctly deeper style than the Charmes-Chambertin, showing more earth, spice and iron-like rare steak notes and finishing with greater grip. The Charmes is ethereal by comparison to this big boy, which finishes with a serious tannic structure and salty minerality.

The 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru clearly is the most intense of Christophe's 2016s on the nose with ebullient scents of black cherries, bilberry, slightly overripe Satsumas and rose petal aromas. It takes a while to get going, but it is worth persisting with. The palate is very harmonious with supple tannin, a silver bead of acidity that winds its way through the layers of pure red fruit and it fans out with a glorious mineral-rich, lightly spiced finish. The mouth is tingling afterward for 30 to 45 seconds. Superb—this is a strong follow-up to the 2015 and may even surpass it.

About the Producer

Perrot Minot's attitude toward Perrot Minot Biodiversity encouraged For several years, Christophe Perrot-Minot has favored the use of products approved for organic farming and reduced the doses of conventional products prescribed, thanks to the observation of the weather, wind, humidity and heat. It also strives to recreate a microbial life in its soils and to improve its structure by practicing systematic plowing and winter ridging of the feet. Limited returns Guyot pruning is relatively short to limit the release of grapes and allow good ripening of the berries. The practice of leaf stripping and green harvesting can be useful depending on the vintage to guarantee optimum ripeness of the fruit. Very supervised harvests The harvest is exclusively manual and sorted a first time in the vineyard, then transported in small crates for a second passage on a sorting table. All the grapes are cut in half to check their sanitary condition and to eliminate any that are not perfectly ripe. Depending on the vintage, a proportion of the whole harvest is put into vats. It is transported in small bins, which allows the logs to be kept intact and the most natural and accurate expression of the terroir possible. The logs are calibrated in order to keep only the source millerandage of the oldest and most authentic vines. The estate is looking for a production of around 25 to 30 hl/ha for the whole production.
