Bright blueberries and blackberries on the nose, with minerals. Full body, with chewy tannins that are velvety. Sneaks up on you. Chewy. Beautiful.

I have tasted this various times. The nose is wonderful with fabulous yet subtle aromas of dried berries and mushrooms. Turns to fresh flowers. Full body, with firm and focused tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Very fine and polished. Some orange peel undertones. This is a wonderful wine just now released. Drink or hold.

Saving the very best for last, the 2007 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata is a gorgeous expression, with towering varietal characteristics that casts a long shadow. There’s so much going on in the glass: Prune, blackberry, cassis, dried herbs and licorice are beautifully woven together. The wine is firm and crisp in the mouth with perfectly integrated tannins. You can drink this wine in a few years, or decide to keep it for later. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. The Scavino family (Enrico and his daughters Enrica and Elisa) carry forth an important family legacy with a wide range of cru-specific wines that brilliantly exhibit individual styles – despite all being made by the same hands. Though an infant, the 2007 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell-Annunziata caresses the palate with gorgeous, silky layers of red berries, flowers and spices. The wine dazzles with expressive inner perfume and sweet, refined tannins that frame the exquisite finish. This is another head-spinning, hugely promising Barolo from Scavino. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. This is a stunning set of new wines from Enrico Scavino. Over the last few years Scavino has begun to incorporate lots vinified in specially designed tanks that allow for greater contact with the skins. This year Scavino has a new Barolo from a recently acquired parcel in Monvigliero, the most historic vineyard in the village of Verduno. Scavino had incorporated the fruit from this parcel into the straight Barolo when he had access to the vineyard under lease, but now that he has full control of the vineyard he has decided to bottle the wine separately. The first vintage, the 2007, is a stunner. Importer: Banville & Jones Wine Merchants, New York, NY; tel. (204) 294-4899
About the Producer
Paolo Scavino is an estate in Barolo known for its polished, elegant red wines from the Nebbiolo grape variety. The estate owns 23 hectares (57 acres) entirely within Barolo with parcels in 19 different cru vineyards in all but three of the Barolo communes. The range of nine Barolo wines is led by the Bric Dël Fiasc (from the Fiasco cru in Castiglione Falletto, and produced in both standard and Riserva bottlings), the Cannubi, and the Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata which is aged for an additional year both in large casks and in bottle, and is sourced from a cru vineyard in La Morra. The portfolio of red wines also includes a Langhe Nebbiolo, two Barbera d'Alba wines, a Dolcetto d'Alba, and a Vino Rosso blended from the younger vines grown on the estate. The Langhe Sorriso is Paulo Scavino's key white wine made from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. The company was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falleto by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Enrico Scavino has been working in the winery since the age of ten, beginning in 1951. He now runs his estate with his daughters, who are the fourth generation.
