Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. I have a lot of time for this estate and the 2007 performs strongly under blind conditions. It has quite a luscious bouquet: very pure and floral with cassis, blackberry and crushed violet. Margaux like in some ways. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins on the entry, good depth of flavour with the finish flattered by some creamy oak, but there is the fruit intensity to support it. Splendid! Tasted January 2011.

Tasted at BBR’s Bordeaux 2007 tasting. This has quite a sappy, blackberry, boysenberry and blueberry nose with a slight tinniness becoming evident with aeration. Nice lift, but compact at the moment. The palate is commendable for the vintage, good concentration, thick tannins, a lot of new oak to be subsumed but still, well balanced with a weighty blackberry, cedar and boysenberry finish. Slight hardness on the finish, but that will disappear with time. This is a Les Carmes that wants to make a statement. Impressive. Drink 2012-2020. Tasted July 2009.

As one might expect, this is not a big, deep effort, but rather a wine of quintessential elegance. Its deep ruby/purple hue is accompanied by complex, cedary, burning ember, charcoal, menthol, blueberry and raspberry notes. Medium-bodied, elegant, and complex, it is best consumed over the next 7-8 years.

About the Producer
Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion is located in the Pessac-Leognan (Pessac-Leognan) production area on the left bank of Bordeaux. It was once part of Chateau Haut-Brion, one of the five famous wineries in Bordeaux. In 1584, Jean De Pontac, the 101-year-old old manor owner and founder of Chateau Haut Brion, donated the water mill in the manor and its surrounding small pastures and vineyards to the Carmes de Notre-Dame Abbey, officially opening Chateau Les Carmes History of Haut-Brion. At the beginning of the acquisition, the winery only owned 4.7 hectares of vineyards, but now the vineyard has expanded to 10 hectares. Made up of gravel, clay and sand. Planted are Cabernet Franc (39%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Merlot (41%).A small Peugue stream in the winery is the cool stream flowing under the new wine cellar. It creates a microclimate exclusive to Ritz-Carlton and gives Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion the most refined and elegant charm.
