Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose of the 2017 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur is meaty and earthy with baked plums, mulberries, cassis and woodsmoke aromas. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant, fresh and soft with a juicy finish. The wine was aged in French oak, 30% new, for 17 months. The blend is 57% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc.

The tentative blend for the 2017 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur is 57% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it opens with bright, pretty red currants and black cherries with touches of cassis and Provence herbs plus a hint of pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and juicy with plenty of vibrant fruit and soft tannins, finishing savory.

The 2017 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a bit understated relative to some recent vintages, but it is nevertheless very pretty. Floral overtones and cool red berry fruit give the 2017 its distinctive, lifted personality. It is a bit light in structure but it is otherwise very nicely done; I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years, while the flavors remain fresh.

The 2017 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is gorgeous. Silky, understated and wonderfully expressive, the 2017 is a wine of pure and total seduction. Bright red-toned fruit and lifted floral notes extend effortlessly into the finish. In 2017, the Merlots and Cabernet Franc struggled most with the cool, overcast weather of August, so most of that fruit went into the Marquis. The blend is 57% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The Marquis is a lovely second wine from Calon Ségur. Tasted three times.

The 2017 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur, bottled in May 2019, offers attractive blackberry, raspberry coulis and light briary aromas on the nose, which is well defined. The palate is very Pauillac in style with graphite-tinged black fruit, reflecting the higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon now used in the blend. This will form delightful drinking over the next 5 to 8 years.

The 2017 Marquis de Ségur, the deuxième vin of Calon-Ségur, was cropped at 43.5hl/ha and matured in 30% new oak. It has quite a powerful bouquet that almost dwarfs the 2015 that I tasted alongside. Merlot dominates the aromatics, a mélange of black and blue fruit, later crushed violet making it almost Margaux-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet core of fruit and crisp acidity. It is quite saline in the mouth and then tapers towards a cedar-tinged finish that expresses the Cabernet Sauvignon. Good potential and a fine second label.
