Tasting notes

Reviewed by: Neal Martin
The 2018 La Gravette de Certan sample, the second wine of Vieux Château Certan, is tasted from a one-year old barrel. This year it contains no Cabernet Franc, just Merlot and the younger Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Matured in around 50% new oak, it has pretty brambly red fruit mixed with violet and blood orange aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, a little angular at the moment, chalky perhaps, with black pepper liberally sprinkled over the finish. This is a delightful Deuxième Vin to enjoy over the next decade.

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2018 La Gravette de Certan charges out of the gate with expressive notions of spiced blackberries, Black Forest cake and stewed plums, plus hints of cinnamon toast, dusty earth and iron ore, with a touch of potpourri. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with juicy black fruits, framed by velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.
About the Producer
The second Wine of the estate La Gravette de Certan is made subsequent to the blending tastings of Vieux Château Certan. Produced from young vines and a contrast to the First Wine, La Gravette de Certan is a wine with outstanding precision that faithfully mirrors the pedigree of the vineyard. It is a quote «Although it has undeniable similarities to its superior, it offers a more accessible character in its youth.».
