Tasting notes

Over-achievers in short, the 2009 La Fleur de Bouard is fabulous, with notes of blueberry, plum, licorice, white flowers and camphor followed by a full-bodied, well-endowed, textured, supple wine. Stunningly concentrated, yet silky and seductive, it should be drunk over the next 10+ years. Both of these wines, from the 50-acre estate owned by Hubert de Bouard, are the reference points for Lalande de Pomerol.

Tasted at Chateau Angelus. This has a very rich, fruitcake and black cherry scented bouquet, with touches of dried prune developing with aeration. The palate is full-bodied, slightly savoury with meaty black fruits, very concentrated towards the finish that is lacking a little finesse and poise, but does pack a punch.

The 2009 La Fleur de Bouard (made from yields of 45 hectoliters per hectare; 13.5% alcohol) is a Merlot-based wine with brilliant purity, abundant black cherry, plum, and boysenberry fruit, extraordinary density, decent acids, and high tannins. This full-bodied, concentrated, impressively endowed 2009 should age nicely for 10-15 years. At a recent tasting of the 2000 vintage, I was reminded of how great this estate’s luxury cuvee can be. It was off the charts in terms of richness and personality. (Tasted three times.) Unquestionably a star of Lalande de Pomerol is the 50-acre estate of Hubert and Corinne de Bouard, who produce wines that fly well above their pedigree. Tasting through older vintages proves that these are the “real deal,” as they age quite well. One can even argue that the luxury cuvee, La Plus de la Fleur de Bouard, is one of the top twenty wines being produced in Bordeaux - a remarkable achievement given the appellation’s lack of status.

This has a nice balance, good fruit, cinnamon, and other spices on the nose. Full bodied and delicious, hints of milk chocolate and fruit. Lovely balance and a long finish rounds this wine out. Barrel sample.

Aromas of crushed blueberries and minerals, with hints of forest floor. Full body, with chewy tannins and a juicy finish. Tannins are polished though. Stylish wine from this vintage. Try it in 2015.

About the Producer

Chateau La Fleur de Bouard is located in the heart of France on the right bank of the Garonne River, close to the two famous appellations of St. Emilion and Pomeral, and in a unique geographical location. The vineyards of the winery are located in the Lalande de Pomerol appellation and cover an area of 25 hectares. Of these, 17 hectares are located on the Neac plateau, with soils composed of top clay and deep gravel. The remaining 8 hectares of the vineyard are made up of larger pebble grains and a few clays. The vineyards are planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a density of 8,547 vines per hectare. The grapes of Château Baudelaire are macerated at a low temperature of 4 to 8°C before being fermented in alcoholic fermentation in wooden winemaking vats or oak barrels. Depending on the grape variety and the year of harvest, the wine is stored in new and old oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and maturation for 12 to 33 months. Château La Fleur Saint Georges offers three series of wines: Le Plus de la Fleur de Bouard, La Fleur de Bouard and Chateau La Fleur Saint Georges. Among them, the 2009 vintage of Bouard has a deep color, aromas of red and black fruits, slightly vanilla and coffee, a rounded palate with silky tannins, a complex structure and a long finish, making it the best Bouard to date.
