Tasting notes

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 La Croix de Gay bursts from the glass with notes of Christmas cake, stewed black plums and Black Forest cake with hints of espresso, black plums and licorice. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers mouth-coating black fruit preserves and loads of spicy accents, framed by soft, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on a persistent aniseed note.

The 2019 La Croix de Gay opens in the glass with rich aromas of plummy fruit, orange rind, toasty new oak and spices. Medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with rather chewy tannins and a somewhat rustic profile, it will likely round out with a little bottle age.

The 2019 La Croix de Gay is a bit rustic and rough around the edges, but it has good depth and plenty of character. Black fruit, leather, chocolate, licorice and dried herbs give the 2019 savory intensity to match its succulent dark fruit.

The 2019 La Croix de Gay is powerful and a bit rough around the edges, but quite pleasant just the same. Dried flowers, herbs, menthol, licorice, scorched earth and blue fruits all open up in this mid-weight yet hearty Pomerol. The 2019 is not especially refined, but it has plenty of character.

The 2019 La Croix de Gay is rather muddled on the nose and comes across rather Bretty. The palate is hard on the entry with graphite and seaweed notes, but it feels just a bit dry and mealy towards the finish. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

The 2019 La Croix de Gay has a clean, fresh bouquet of perfumed red berry fruit laced with crushed stone, conveying a little more sophistication than suggested by the barrel sample. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, light in style but balanced, leading to a harmonious finish.

The 2019 La Croix de Gay has a slightly muted bouquet at the moment, the fruit profile rather sullen. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannins, plenty of black fruit with a peppery finish, yet it feels a bit "grumpy" compared to some of its peers. Hopefully it will lighten up.

About the Producer

Chateau La Croix de Gay is a member of the Union Des Grands Crus De Bordeaux and one of the Pomerol appellations in Bordeaux, France. Château Gay Cross has been run by five generations of the Ravnaud family, whose history is closely linked to the Pomerol appellation. The current owner of the estate is Chantal Lebreton. Located in the best location on the Pomerol plateau, Château Gay Cross combines traditional methods with modern techniques. Nourished by the excellent terroir of Pomerol, the wines of Gay Cross are capable of giving off aromas of vanilla, almond and red fruit, winning awards in various competitions and satisfying the discerning wine lover. Gay Cross currently has 4 hectares of vineyard, 95% of which is devoted to Merlot grapes and 5% to Cabernet Franc, all of which have an average age of 30 years. When the grapes reach the ideal state of ripeness, the winery harvests them by hand. The harvested grapes are selected, broken into skins and then vinified in the traditional way. The wine is then matured in 50% new French oak barrels for 18 months before being bottled in the winery
