Jos. Prum, located in the village of Wehlen in the Mosel region of Germany, is one of the most legendary wineries in Germany. The founders of Prum Winery are the Prum family. The family, like the ancestors of the Muller family, bought a plot of land at an auction of church properties, after which all members of the family relocated to the plot. Later, the Pulang family gradually expanded the field, and their descendants continued to multiply. In 1911, when the estate was distributed, the family vineyard was divided into seven parcels. One of the parks, called "Sonnenuhr", was assigned to Johann Josef Prum, who set up his own business that year and founded the Prum estate. Much of the winery's reputation, however, owes much to its son, Sebastian Prum. Sebastian has worked at the winery since the age of 18 and developed the unique style of Château Prang wines during the 1930s and 1940s. In 1969, Sebastian Prum passed away, and his son Dr. Manfred Prum began to take over the winery. Today, the winery is run by him and his brother Wolfgang Prum. The 43 acres (17.4 hectares) of vineyards at the Prang Estate are spread over 4 regions, all on slopes of grey Devonian slate. The garden is entirely planted with Riesling, with an average age of 50 years and a planting density of 7,500 plants per hectare. The grapes are harvested manually after they are ripe. In terms of winemaking, Prang Winery uses a combination of stainless steel tanks and fiberglass tanks for fermentation. Aging takes place in traditional wooden barrels. The aging process continues until July of the following year before bottling. The bottling dates of Château Prang wines are later than most wineries in the Moselle region. The wines from Château Prang are always full of delicate fruit flavors and are super intense, with very low alcohol levels and fairly refreshing acidity. Several of the winery's vintages were made with relatively large amounts of sulfur dioxide, but over the long term, this seemed to protect their wines, making them surprisingly long-lived. In some vintages, they also produce a super fine selection of wines designated by the winery as "Gold Seal", which is easily recognizable because of the gold leaf packaging. There are a few select wines that are even more stylized, dubbed "Long Gold Bottles", which are collected as liquid gold by collectors around the world.
