The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées impressed me from barrel and now in bottle, it is certainly fulfilling its potential. Served blind at a restaurant in Beaune, it offers copious plush red fruit on the nose laced with subtle limestone scents. The palate is beautifully balanced with velvety smooth tannins, immense depth for a Village Cru with a purity on the finish that is completely disarming. I doubt that you will find many Village Crus that will surpass this little gem from Lignier. Tasted blind at La Superbe restaurant.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin les Seuvrées comes from 60- to 70-year-old vines and included 30% whole-bunch fruit. This has a more refined and precise bouquet than the la Justice thanks to the effortlessly pure red fruit intertwined with cold stone/limestone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a killer line of acidity and a brightness on the finish that is a pure joy. This is a superb village cru, one of the best that I encountered this vintage.

(production here was 37 hectoliters per hectare, which Lignier described as significantly less than normal due to a high proportion of millerandé grapes; 25% vendange entier): Good dark red. Black cherry and a hint of licorice on the nose. A bit darker in its fruit character than La Justice, showing a supple texture and an impression of fullness but also good inner-mouth tension and saline minerality. Finishes with a slight wildness.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées has a lovely, open-knit wild strawberry, cranberry, basalt and orange blossom scented bouquet that seems to bloom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a crisp line of acidity, vivacious and linear, then fanning out with brio towards the lively finish. A little conservative, yet compelling. Tasted at the Domaine.

About the Producer

For vinifications and ageing, our methods are little interventionist. The fruit’s quality is essential to craft 24 great wines. We make fresh, fine and elegant wines which are also full bodied with a long lasting and mouth-watering finish. Each of our terroirs (Clos de la Roche, Morey, Gevrey-Chambertin, …) expresses itself through our wines. Our ageing in barrels (20 to 30% new oak) is rather long (20 or 22 months), on lees and without racking after malolactic fermentation. The wines are bottled using gravity, without fining in order to keep the wine’s freshness and its ageing potential.
