The 2005 Shiraz Mount Edelstone is ripe, generous and balanced. Layers of dark cherry, blackberry, peppery spice and green sage unfold in an open-knit frame. Fleshy textures and al dente tannins provide an even flow through the supple finish. This is at its peak and will hold.

The 2005 leads with jube and pastille, blackberry, cocoa, charry oak and tapenade in the mouth. This 2005 Mount Edelstone Vineyard is an opulent expression of this Mount Edelstone vineyard wine. While there is presence of dried herbs here, I do find this to be meatier and more savory than the wines from the 1990s; so despite the plushness, it carries the DNA of the vineyard forward. This has a pH of 3.62, 5.6 grams per liter of total acidity and 14% alcohol. According to Henschke: "Above-average winter rainfall led to a beautiful spring, which provided ideal flowering weather. A wet and wild summer with weekly thunderstorms helped maintain good subsoil moisture throughout the season. The result was an early, warm and fast-paced vintage, one of the best on record, with fantastic quality fruit and good yields."
About the Producer
Henschkes family name and reputation are now being upheld by the fifth generation, Stephen and his wife Prue. Stephen is the biochemist and winemaker and Prue is the viticulturist. Over the past 14 years, Prue`s viticultural management has breathed new life into the vineyards, which fully capitalise on some of the most remarkable old vine material in the world. Both Stephen and Prue continue to craft their white wines with a focus on purity, while their red wines have a strong focus on terroir, using traditional winemaking techniques. The highly sought-after Hill of Grace is the product of vines planted in the 1860s and is Australia's greatest single vineyard Shiraz. HIil of Grace and Mount Edelstone are arguably the two oldest single vineyard wines produced in Australia that tell the wine story of Australia. Henschke Rieslings are the finest in the Eden Valley and amongst the very best in Australia.
