Tasting notes

This Figeac has a gamey nose dominated by Cabernet Franc: typically masculine with touches of sous-bois emerging stronger with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, spicy upon entry with dark chocolate and a hint of raw coffee beans. Firm, rather obtrusive tannins, perhaps lacking the harmony of a great Figeac and lacking some grip on the stalky finish. Drink now-2015. Tasted November 2006.

Dense purple-colored, with a big, spicy, distinctive bouquet of cedar, spice box, and tobacco, this medium-bodied, intensely fragrant Figeac should prove to be more satisfying aromatically than on the palate. Nevertheless, its elegance as well as clean, pure red and black fruit, licorice, spice box, and dried herbs are endearing. This provocative blend of 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, and 30% Merlot has been performing up to its renowned terroir over recent years. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2016

The nose lacks definition, flabby and quite thin. The palate has sturdy tannins, quite minerally but has a green streak running through. Quite compact and easy-drinking in style. I expected a little more from Figeac. A second encounter has me worried: the nose seems to have completely fallen apart: loose, oxidized and leathery! That stalkiness is pronounced on the palate and there is no harmony or cohesion. A poor wine. Tasted June 2003.

An aromatic smorgasbord of tobacco smoke, cedar wood, fruitcake, black cherries, and currants jumps from the glass of this medium-bodied, austere, angular 2002. Although somewhat superficial, what is there is complex, elegant, and savory. It will drink well for 8-10 years.

The 2002 Figeac has an open and airy bouquet with perfumed red berry fruit, rose petal and quince. It gains delineation with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with rustic tannins, a little coarse, quite savoury in style with some dryness just creeping in towards the finish. I think that Cheval Blanc had the upper hand in this period. Bit short. Tasted at the château.

Good dark red. Plum , mocha, tobacco and mint on the nose. Suave on entry, then rather closed and cool in the middle. Offers good energy in the mouth but comes across as slightly green. Finishes with firm tannins and good grip.

Ruby-red. Currant, tobacco, smoked meat and a whiff of pepper on the nose. Supple on entry, then fine-grained and light on its feet, with complex flavors of currant, raspberry, minerals, tobacco and game. The leafy quality I detected a year ago has not become more obtrusive, but this is a wine of only moderate ripeness. Finishes firmly tannic and rather subtle, with a complicating note of oaky torrefaction.

(40% merlot, 30% cabernet franc and 30% cabernet sauvignon; currently about 12.9% alcohol) Good bright ruby. Pure aromas of blackberry, licorice and bitter chocolate. Sweet, juicy and tightly wound, with nicely delineated flavors of blackberry, bitter chocolate, mint, licorice and tobacco leaf. Penetrating and rather fruity for young Figeac. Tannins are firm-verging-on-tough and yet rather suave. The ultimate score for this wine will hinge on how strong the leafy character becomes during elevage

About the Producer

During the ten years from 2010 to 2020, the team at Château-Figeac stepped up their efforts to craft consistently precise wines whose purity reflects the distinctive character of the terroir. Each plot and each grape variety, once fully expressed, brings a new element to the rich canvas created every year at blending, giving birth to a remarkable succession of great wines. Freshness is a hallmark of our 2015, 2018 and 2020 vintages, despite very hot and sunny weather. So-called classic vintages are reinterpreted with great subtlety and a mineral cast in the 2010, 2016 and 2019 wines. The singular gift of the Château-Figeac terroir comes to the fore in the 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2017 vintages, when the weather was less auspicious. They produced highly successful wines greatly appreciated by faithful connoisseurs. In 2021, Château-Figeac inaugurated a new 5,000 m² semi underground winery equipped with custom made stainless steel and wooden vats. The summit of elegance, a jewel of innovation and precision designed to meet High Environmental Quality standards, it also offers visitors two light and airy tasting rooms.
