Lots of freshly cut violets on the nose with purple fruits and hints of chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied. Integrated tannins. Second wine of Trotanoy. Needs time to soften and open. Try after 2028.
About the Producer
Acquired in 1953 by the Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, Château Trotanoy has been considered one of the first growths of Pomerol since the 18th century. Since 2009, a selection of gravelly parcels located in the north-eastern part of the vineyard has been dedicated to Espérance de Trotanoy, a wine that opens up with fruit and proves delicious after a few years of ageing, but which retains the depth, complexity and power characteristic of Trotanoy's unique terroir. The Trotanoy vineyard, partly spared by the dramatic frosts of 1956, is planted on a soil composed half of gravel on clay and half of deep black clay on a bed of iron dross. Its name, meaning in old French "trop anoi" or "trop ennuie" (when working the land), was inspired by this exceptional terroir: after a rain shower, the clay soil absorbs water and solidifies to an almost impenetrable texture. This mix of soils gives the wine both power and depth as well as great complexity. Espérance de Trotanoy, produced only in very limited quantities in certain vintages, is vinified in cement vats and aged in French oak barrels.
