Tasting notes

Nicolas Serrette has turned out a mint-edged, slightly red-fruited 2020 Cornas Patou, with some darker hints of Ribena. From 80-year-old vines and aged in mainly older barrels, it's full-bodied and supple on the mid-palate, then finishes fresh and long, with an impressive complement of mouth-starching tannins. I found it decidedly less impressive than the 2019, but it could surprise.

Glass-staining violet. Deeply pitched, mineral-accented aromas of blackberry, cherry, game and violet are complemented by a suggestion of exotic spices. Youthfully chewy and appealingly sweet, offering intense black and blue fruit, floral pastille, smoky bacon and spicecake flavors, with a hint of salty olive. Finishes sweet, smoky and long, displaying finely etched mineral and floral pastille notes and steadily building tannins.
About the Producer
Domaine Dumien Serrette is a traditional winery located in Cornas, in the heart of the Rhône Valley, France. Established in a region known for its steep slopes and granite soils, the estate spans some of the oldest vineyards in the appellation. The winery is renowned for its focus on producing high-quality Cornas wines, primarily from Syrah grapes. It employs traditional methods, including the use of an old basket press and spontaneous fermentation, while farming practices are organic, though not certified, emphasizing minimal intervention. With a limited production of around 1,000 cases annually, Dumien Serrette prioritizes quality over quantity. The wines are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and ability to age gracefully, making them a hidden gem in the Northern Rhône wine scene.
