The 2021 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is matured in 80% new oak with 15% whole bunches. It has a relatively light nose for this climat (though in keeping with several others encountered.) Fine delineation, nicely focused but just missing a bit of sensuality. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, moderate weight, pretty red berry fruit laced with desiccated orange peel and marmalade, gentle and harmonious on the finish. Fine.

About the Producer

Domaine Drouhin-Laroze, located in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation in Burgundy, France, is a winery with a long history in the region. Jean-Baptise Laroze began planting grapes in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1850. In 1919, Felix's daughter, Suzanne, married Alexandre Drouhin, who was born in Chambolle-Musigny. Drouhin also owns vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny. In accordance with local custom, the couple's surname became the name of the estate, hence the name Domaine Drouhin-Laroze, which marked the eventual birth of Château Laroze. Domaine Drouhin-Laroze is now managed by Philippe and Christine Drouhin. Domaine Drouhin-Laroze has been in business for five generations since its inception. Caroline and Nicolas will be the sixth generation to take charge. Each generation of owners has made a unique contribution to the development and progress of the estate. Domaine Drouhin-Laroze now has 11.5 hectares of vineyards, all located in the prestigious Cote de Nuits appellation, stretching from Gevrey-Chambertin to Vougeot. The estate's Grand Cru vineyards include Musigny, Chambertin Clos de Beze, Vougeot, Bonnes-Mares, Latricieres-Chambertin and Chapelle-Chambertin. In 1996, the estate acquired the Grand Cru Mussini vineyard, whose grapes are not as powerful as those from Chambertin or as smooth as those from Romagny, but whose wines are dark, elegant, concentrated, refined and aromatic. The wines of Chambétanbes, on the other hand, are known as the "king of wines" and represent the potential for outstanding Burgundy wines. Domaine Drouhin-Laroze produces around 50,000 bottles of wine each year. Of these, 46% are Grand Cru wines, 14% are Premier Cru wines and 40% are village wines. The wines of the estate are sold worldwide. The wines produced by the current owner, Philippe, have a unique character, combining the best qualities of the grapes with the typical terroir characteristics, resulting in elegant, powerful, smooth and aromatic wines.
