Tasting notes

Reviewed by: Joaquín Hidalgo
The 2023 LaLume is 85% Treixadura with other local varieties from Ribeiro. Aged for six to seven months in barrel, stainless steel and concrete, it delivers the region’s hallmark profile with notes of honey and delicate flowers, plus a herbal touch. This is broad and unctuous, with a straightforward palate. It offers a long, lightly saline finish. This is an expressive white with a subtle nod to the New World.
About the Producer
Dominio do Bibei, established in 2001 by Javier Domínguez in Ribeira Sacra, Spain, aims to highlight the region's unique terroir while reconnecting with his family's roots. The steeply sloped vineyards, reminiscent of Portugal's Douro Valley, are situated at altitudes between 350 and 920 meters above sea level. The north-facing schist and granite soils contribute to the wines' freshness and acidity, despite the warm climate. Javier cultivates 32 hectares, primarily growing Mencía for red blends, along with native varieties such as Brancellao, Mouratón, Sousón, Caíño, and Alicante Bouschet. His white wines are mainly Godello-based, supplemented by Doña Blanca, Albariño, and Torrontés. Employing a natural winemaking approach, he destems grapes and ages them in various vessels, including oak vats and Nomblot eggs. His flagship wine, Lalama, exemplifies his stylish winemaking and the aging potential of wines from this lesser-known region.
