Tasting notes

Reviewed by: Pierre Rovani
It is all but impossible to imagine a better wine than this dark ruby/purple-colored wine. Incredibly complex and dense aromas of sugar-coated blackberries, blueberries, and cassis are intertwined with stones, minerals, and chocolate. This sublime, and supremely elegant offering boggles the mind with its seemingly self-controlled core. As I was tasting it I felt as though it was judging me, selectively showing me what it chose to share. Its thick and velvety texture is soft, focused, refined, and yet hedonistically opulent. This gloriously concentrated wine is full-bodied, powerful (yet graceful), vibrant (yet muscular), expressive and forward (yet tightly-wound and with plenty in reserve), and precise (yet intricate). Layer upon layer of minerals, earth, and violets are drenched in plums and blueberry liqueur that saturate the palate's aftertaste. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2015. Importers: Martine's Wines, Inc., San Rafael, CA; tel (415) 485-1800, and Paterno Imports, Chicago, IL; tel (847) 604-8900.

The dark-colored 1996 Musigny displays super aromas of flowers, berries, and mint. It has huge breadth of fresh, succulent, and lush blueberries, raspberries, violets, and cherries. This medium-to-full-bodied wine should hit its peak around 2006 and hold for a decade or more.
