The 2023 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from 1.3 hectares of the climat—half its acreage. The bouquet is beautifully defined, with black cherry, blueberry and violet scents all blossoming in the glass. Fresh and sapid, the palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe tannins and a keen line of acidity. There is superb structure and grip on the finish. This will need time to reach its plateau.

Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet, minty berries, orange zest, rose petals and spices, the 2023 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, with a lively core of fruit, powdery tannins and a saline finish. Cool and charming, it's sensual, perfumed style will render it accessible young.

About the Producer

Domaine de Chezeaux is a relatively small winery, yet it is the largest owner of the Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, controlling nearly 60% of the vineyard. The domaine also partially owns Clos St Denis, Chambertin, and some parcels of Gevrey Premier Cru, though these wines are often unfamiliar as they are labeled differently. Established in 1982, the holdings belong to the esteemed Mercier family, who operate under the umbrella company SNC des Chezeaux. Most of the land ownership dates back to the early 1930s, but since there has been no winemaking by the Mercier family, the vineyards are farmed by others under a system known as ‘en metayage’. Well-known names like Ponsot, Leclerc, and Berthaut cultivate over 60% of the crop as payment, while the remainder is produced under the Domaine des Chezeaux label. The unique aspect of this arrangement is that the metayers are also responsible for élevage, bottling, and distribution. Historically, this meant it was unclear who had produced each wine when placing an order. Fortunately, new labels now specify production details. The wines are characterized by lovely acidity and a creamy texture, making them capable of aging gracefully for many years.
