Tasting notes

Tasted from a small tank where it had been assembled for an earlier-than-usual bottling, the 2017 Corton Grand Cru offers up an expressive bouquet of rose hip, cinnamon, sweet spices and red berries. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a sweet, sun-kissed core of fruit that reflects the warmth of August 2017, framed by an open-knit chassis of stony tannins. It's a charming, expressive rendition of the Domaine's Corton.

The 2017 Corton Grand Cru is performing beautifully from bottle, bursting from the glass with a captivating bouquet of peonies, rose hips, sweet red berries, orange rind, spices and subtle soil tones. On the palate, the wine medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with succulent acids, good concentration and a long, exquisitely perfumed finish. Indeed, it's only by comparison with the domaine's utterly suave wines from Vosne-Romanée later in the tasting that this Corton's tannins seem comparatively coarse-grained. Picked on September 4th, it is showing appreciably better than it did when I tasted it from tank before bottling last year.

The 2017 Corton Grand Cru is floral, gracious and so inviting. White pepper, mint and pine perk up the red cherry and cranberry fruit flavors nicely. In 2017, the Corton is decidedly ethereal and pointed, with terrific energy and tons of class. It will be interesting to see how it develops, as there is a good deal of structure beneath. Even in the short time I was able to follow it in this tasting, the Corton opened up very nicely. This fruit was brought in on September 4, and was the domaine’s first pick.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
