The 2013 Corton Grand Cru was picked on October 3 at an average yield of 19.5 hectoliters per hectare. It has a light blueberry and crushed strawberry-scented bouquet that does not quite possess the intensity of the 2013 Echézeaux. There is a hint of fresh fig that emerges with time in the glass. The palate is clean and fresh. There is something almost "airy" about this Le Corton, with pitch perfect acidity and perhaps more transparency than I have observed in earlier vintages. It does not boast great density and fruit concentration on the finish, and perhaps it is just deprived the substance that a more benevolent season would have bestowed. Nevertheless, it is a delicious, almost easy-drinking little ingénue of a Corton that will give much drinking pleasure over the next 12-15 years. Production is 461 cases. Tasted February 2016.

The 2013 Corton Grand Cru already has a precise bouquet with dark berries and light floral scents, not a million miles away from the 2010. The palate is medium-bodied, nicely structured, distant at first, but warming to you. There is a slight earthiness toward the finish that is precise and focused with a dash of white pepper near the finish. This should evolve into a quite splendid Corton Grand Cru.

The 2013 Corton is incredibly dark in this vintage. Smoke, leather, dark spices, plums and black cherries coat the palate in a textured, exotic wine endowed with serious depth. This is the first sign that DRC's 2013s are very reticent at this stage. As always, the Corton is a blend of fruit from Bressandes, Clos du Roi and Renardes.

About the Producer

The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or DRC is one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world with 25.5 hectares mostly in Vosne-Romanée on the route des Grands Crus in the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits of the Burgundy vineyards (named after the 1.8 hectare Clos de la Romanée-Conti, one of the most prestigious mythical grands crus in the world). The civil company of the same name was founded in 1942 by Edmond Gaudin de Villaine. It is now co-managed for their heir family by the winegrowers Aubert de Villaine and Perrine Fenal.
