Tasting notes

Aromas of sweet cherries, berries, vine smoke, orange zest and spices introduce Mortet's 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, ample and perfumed wine that's supple, satiny and seamless, with melting tannins, lively acids and a long, aromatic finish. I suspect that, in bottle, it will emerge as the king of the cellar this year, though Mortet's Bonnes-Mares, Mazis-Chambertin and Clos de Bèze run it close.

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru comprises three barrels this year, 50% whole bunches and two-thirds new oak (before it was 100%). That reduction in new wood makes a difference - very fine delineation with quite intense wild strawberry, blackcurrant and sea spray aromas and just a hint of brine. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and hints of dark chocolate infusing the black fruit. It’s very harmonious with a smooth, almost honeyed (in texture) finish. Gorgeous.
