Tasting notes

(6.5 g/l total acidity; 120 g/l residual sugar): Bright golden yellow. Exotic, full-blown aromas of apricot, pineapple syrup, honey, marzipan and crepe suzette. Thick, fat and honeyed, but with excellent lift to its opulent flavors of apricot, yellow peach and honeycomb complicated by coconut, caramel and vanilla nuances. This very dense wine features penetrating acidity that provides sharp definition and lift on the very long finish. Lately, Alexandre de Lur Saluces has been making opulent wines at de Fargues that remind me of the Yquem vintages he made in years past.

The 2011 Château de Fargues has a touch of chlorine on the nose, well defined with honey and saffron aromas. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite fresh and zesty, good tension, lightly spiced on the finish with a long ginger-tinged aftertaste, this should age well over the next 20 years. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

Tasted blind at the Sauternes 2011 horizontal tasting. The Château de Fargues 2011 has a slightly disjointed nose at first, although with aeration it appears to coalesce with scents of honey, almond shavings, an exotic hint of marzipan and just a touch of mandarin. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity, well balanced and poised with a noticeable spicy finish that just tapers in slightly, yet there is genuine persistence and breeding here.

This barrel sample delivers 13.85% alcohol and 136 grams of residual sugar. It has a light, well-defined bouquet with great clarity and minerality. The palate is very pretty on the entry with notes of peach skin, nectarine and dried honey, perhaps just a hint of lemongrass lending the finish a subtle spice note that extends the length. This has very fine potential. Tasted April 2013.

The 2011 de Fargues has a delicate, perhaps slightly more malic bouquet than I was expecting. At present, it is a little more disjointed than its peers although I am sure it will become more cohesive throughout its maturation. The palate shows its true potential: medium-bodied with great tension on the spice-tinged entry. It is cohesive and mellifluous, although at present it does not have the depth or weight of a top flight de Fargues. However, it is precise and beautifully defined on the finish. Drink 2015-2030+.
