Tasting notes

The Château Coutet 1995 Cuvée Madame, picked on October 4 and delivering 145 grams per liter of residual sugar (the lowest of the last four vintages), has a very pure, almost Tokaji-like bouquet with marmalade, lime flower, lanolin and dried honey. The palate is unctuous on the entry with impressive presence in the mouth with notes of Manuka honey dallying with marmalade and dried apricot. It is quite linear toward the finish, very nicely focused with orange rind and honey. This is a powerful Cuvée Madame that will age for decades.

The 1995 Coutet Cuvée Madame has a less flamboyant bouquet than other vintages, quite tight at first with dried honey, pain d’épices, barley sugar and wax resin aromas. The palate is well balanced with a viscous, waxy-textured opening, quite spicy in style, very well balanced and fresh, quite mineral-driven, with that Manuka honey lingering long on the finish. Excellent. (145gm/L residual sugar, 3.5gm/L total acidity, 13.5% alcohol).
About the Producer
Château Coutet is a Premier Cru Classé (French: First Growth) sweet wine from the Sauternes-Barsac appellation located in Barsac, in the southern part of France's Bordeaux vineyards. Château Coutet is one of the oldest Sauternes producing vineyards, and is described by David Peppercorn as a "twin" of Barsac's other Premier cru estate, Château Climens. Coutet also produces a second wine, Chartreuse de Coutet, a dry white wine named Vin Sec de Chateau Coutet and a cuvée in vintages of exceptional quality, Cuvée Madame.
