This Pomerol was so precocious in the flush of youth, but time has certainly taken its toll. A degradated brick rim. The nose is a little funky with savoury fruit, walnut oil and a touch of nutmeg. The palate is medium-bodied, spicy with grippy tannins but little fruit to support it. Leads to a ferrous finish that is comparatively disjointed to other 1997’s. Disappointing. Drink now. Tasted September 2006.

This wine appears to be going through a lighter stage than I remember from my earlier tasting. The wine exhibits a dark ruby/purple color, good fat and ripeness in the mouth, blackberry, truffle, and Asian spice characteristics, an expansive, open-knit style, but a short finish. My instincts suggest I caught this wine at an awkward stage of development since it did not reveal its earlier depth and intensity. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016.

Another outstanding example from this superbly run estate, Clinet's 1997 is extremely forward, with the tell-tale black/purple color and obvious signs of late-picked grapes (what the French call sur-maturite). The wine possesses a jammy blackberry, blueberry, licorice, and smoky-scented nose, sweet, medium to full-bodied, concentrated flavors, low acidity, a satiny, unctuous texture, and a plump, fleshy mouthfeel. This wine will drink gorgeously well when released, yet is capable of lasting for 12-15 years.

Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s Clinet vertical. Like the 1996, the Clinet 1997 is mature in appearance but it has an attractive, lifted, if not complex bouquet that is quite floral in style, hints of red fruits, jasmine, Clementine and iron rust. The palate is medium-bodied with good grip on the entry, very good depth with notes of orange peel, mushroom, thyme and a tannic, quite masculine, ferrous finish. Moderate length, quite assertive and but with a pleasant dry savoury aftertaste. This is not bad considering the vintage, but I would not leave bottles too much longer. Tasted February 2011.

Intense dark inky core. The nose is still closed with black berries and conspicuous new oak. A lot of depth and complexity on the palate which has layers of dark fruits, spice and earth. A sweet finish. Superb for the vintage. Tasted April 1999.

The 1997 Clinet has turned out better than expected from barrel. Its exotic nose of truffles, vanilla, plum liqueur, black fruits, and Asian spices leads to a plump, fat wine with notes of coffee, coconut cream, and blackberries. Surprisingly dense, and revealing lots of tannin, it requires 1-2 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 10-12 years. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2012+.
